About the Family & Social Services Administration (FSSA):


FSSA was established by the Indiana General Assembly in 1991 to consolidate and better integrate the delivery of human services by state government.

FSSA is a health care and social services funding agency.

Ninety-four percent of the agency's total budget is paid to thousands of service providers ranging from major medical centers to a physical therapist working with a child or adult with a developmental disability.

The seven care divisions in FSSA administer services to more than 1.5 million Hoosiers.

FSSA's mission is to compassionately serve Hoosiers of all ages and connect them with social services, health care and their communities.


Role Overview:


The role of Data Architect focuses on how data will be stored, consumed, integrated and managed by different IT systems, as well as any applications using or processing that data in some capacity.

The Data Architect, or Data Engineer, is primarily responsible for the design, creation, deployment, and management of the organization's decision support data, both on premise and cloud, focusing on building and managing infrastructure, security, deployment pipeline, continuous integration (CI) tools, and architecture.

This role will blend system administration and development skills to build solutions that deliver with speed and scale, including ensuring that the right data is collected and managed effectively while making it readily accessible to business and data teams.

This role also plays a key part in developing technical specifications that adhere to Agency budgets, security requirements, and timeframes, including programming standards and both system and infrastructure design.


Salary Statement:
The salary for this position traditionally starts at $79,118.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.

A Day in the Life:
The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Designs databases for recovery, high availability, performance and maintenance;
  • Monitors the standards, procedures, integrity and integration of data;
  • Defines the overall warehouse architecture and standards;
  • Consults with and makes recommendations to business and technical groups at all levels to define data requirements, evaluate data technology needs and formulate solutions;
  • Analyzes data needs and requirements of existing and proposed systems and develop technical, structural and organizational designs and specifications;
  • Evaluates technology and products to determine the feasibility of adding to agency standards;
  • Develops work plans for assigned projects and supervises their execution;
  • Provides guidance and reviews the work of team members on special projects;
  • Identifies and explores the potential strategies for long term planning implementation;
  • Serves as project lead for software products associated with data;
  • Works with and provides guidance to information systems personnel or user agencies for maximum utilization of the agency data.

What You'll Need for Success:

  • Thorough knowledge of computer hardware/software capabilities and configurations;
  • Thorough knowledge of database software, database definition languages, data dictionaries, computer programming and testing of programs;
  • Thorough knowledge of data communications, connectivity and agency used operating systems;
  • Thorough knowledge of data warehouse architecture and standards;
  • Extensive knowledge of the most recent technical developments in the data management field;
  • Ability to perform logic analysis;
  • Ability to read and understand complicated technical manuals;
  • Ability theories, principles and methodologies to existing computer or database software;
  • Ability to design complex data architectures to support the use of agency data;
  • Ability to guide and coordinate the work of others;
  • Effectively communicate, both orally and in writing.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:
This role may be utilized in a supervisory capacity based on agency needs.
