Responsibilities


Work study student employees are representative of Mayo Clinic, working cooperatively with all Mayo Clinic staff, external clients, students, and advisors.

Is responsible to and receives direction from assigned department supervisor.

The work study employee is responsible for completing delegated work assignments to reinforce the learning experience and to provide benefit to the work unit.

The work study employee will be responsible for indicating changes in financial aid award to their assigned supervisor, as well as the work study office.

The work study employee schedule will be arranged collaboratively between the work study employee and assigned department supervisor and in compliance with the financial aid award amount and minimum hours per week requirements.

Dr.

Peter Harris's lab is focused on understanding the genetic/molecular basis of polycystic kidney disease (PKD), a genetic disorder that causes enlarged kidneys and an increased risk of kidney failure.

The work-study student in Dr.

Harris's lab would be responsible for a variety of tasks, including laboratory assistance, data collection and analysis, documentation/record-keeping and supporting senior researchers.

A work study position is available working with Dr. Carli Sussman studying Polycystic kidney disease and the extracellular matrix involvement in kidney injury and repair. We use mouse and zebrafish models of polycystic kidney disease.

Work will include handling of zebrafish and mouse tissues for protein extraction for immunoblotting, fluorescence labeling of slides, and microscopy for image acquisition and analysis.

Work may also include some handling of zebrafish (adults and embryos in petri dishes).

Successful applicants will be able to work at least 10 hours/week, be comfortable with the concept of animal use in research, able carry light lab supplies, and able to climb a low step stool.


For both, you may basked to assist senior researchers with projects, providing an excellent opportunity to learn from experienced scientists.

Working in both labs as a work-study student offers an enriching experience to contribute to the understanding and potential treatment of PKD while gaining valuable skills and insights into biomedical research.

The incumbent must be enrolled in a degree program from a college or university and possess skillset to do assigned work.
