Laboratory of Malaria Immunology and Vaccinology (LMIV)

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), one of the largest institutes of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and part of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), conducts and supports a global program of research to better understand, treat, and ultimately prevent infectious, immunologic, and allergic diseases.

The NIAID Laboratory of Malaria Immunology and Vaccinology (LMIV) has an open position for a postdoctoral fellow in the Molecular Pathogenesis and Biomarkers Section (MPBS). The lab is seeking a postdoctoral fellow to study malaria pathogenesis, severe malaria, and circulating 20S proteasomes on the main NIH campus in Bethesda, Maryland.

LMIV aims to study the research relevant to malaria immunology and vaccine development, pursue novel vaccine concepts, produce prototype malaria vaccines, and conduct early-phase clinical trials of promising vaccine candidates. MPBS endeavors to understand malaria pathogenesis in pregnant women and young children. The lab applies quantitative proteomics tools to identify factors associated with the development of severe malarial anemia in young children. Using this approach, the lab identifies multiple factors in plasma samples collected from malaria-infected children, including increased levels and activity of circulating 20S proteasomes.

The incumbent is expected to support MPBS by fulfilling the following responsibilities:

  • Investigate the role of circulating 20S proteasomes and other biomarkers in the development of severe malaria disease
  • Develop projects complementary to the overall goals of the section

Qualifications

Required

  • Ph.D. in biochemistry or a closely related field
  • Experience in protein purification, including protein complexes, functional characterization of proteins, and protein expression
  • Less than five years of postdoctoral experience

Strong knowledge of the proteasome system and/or targeted protein degradation would be advantageous. U.S. citizenship is not required. This position is subject to a background investigation.

See MPBS ), LMIV ), and the Division of Intramural Research ) to learn more.
