As the Museum Curator, you will be expected to perform the following duties:


Propose, organize oversee assigned loan shows, and reviews proposals by others for major and small-scale exhibitions of Native American Art both from the National Gallery's holdings and from other institutions and private collections.

Propose or oversee projects that embrace new frameworks for Indigenous art in its context and in relation to the National Gallery's broad holdings and art historical purview.

Ensure that exhibitions proposed, organized, or coordinated are well-conceived and well-developed, reflect institutional priorities, are on schedule, and within budget.

Exhibitions will embrace the National Gallery's commitment to scholarly excellence, DEAI, and to providing a visitor-centered experience that engages and attracts contemporary audiences.

Expand and deepen the National Gallery's collections through the acquisition of works of art of the highest quality and relevance to the National Gallery's mission and collecting policies.

Relevant to this curator's focus are our collecting priorities focused on modern and contemporary Native American art, works by women and Global South artists, and art with links to European colonial empires.

Foster and develop an inclusive acquisitions program that enables the National Gallery to serve diverse and contemporary audiences through collections that connect to their experiences and to relevant topics of our time.

Work collaboratively with colleagues in Learning and Engagement, Brand Content and Digital Experience to develop effective means of sharing scholarly information with diverse Gallery audiences.

Work collaboratively with curators across the museum to research existing pertinent collections (including works by non-Native artists representing Native culture and lands), conceives and implements plans for new installations and displays of the permanent collection, including thematic, intertribal, transnational, and transhistorical displays that embrace a variety of media and diverse range of artworks.

Communicate strategically and empathetically to generate enthusiasm and foster an atmosphere receptive to open exchange.

Work in a collegial, collaborative manner to build trust and respect within the Curatorial and Conservation Division and throughout the National Gallery.

Cultivate close and cooperative long-term relationships with donors, collectors, scholars, and art dealers to attract and secure single objects, collections, funds, or other types of gifts to the National Gallery.
