We seek a candidate with a track record as an excellent and inspiring manager. The ideal Student Services Manager (SSM) will have a strong network and experience in making things happen; from obtaining needed resources to supporting students in difficult situations. The SSM will be a creative partner in building the future of the History Department. This position reports directly to the Chief Administrator, with functional reporting lines to the Department Chair, the Director of Graduate Studies (DGS) and the Director of Undergraduate Studies (DUS).


The SSM leads a dynamic team of three full-time Student Services professionals. The manager is responsible for the oversight of all administrative student services in the department, including, but not limited to: time schedule creation, graduate and undergraduate course offerings and curriculum, delivery of major and minor advising, financial aid, registration, student recruitment events, maintenance of academic requirements and plans, and student services website content.

Supervisory activities include but are not limited to:

  • Collaborating with the Graduate Coordinator and Director of Graduate Studies to prepare the GSI assignment schedule each term. This work will include developing and administering GSI and fellowship budgets for both the History and Anthro History graduate programs.
  • Providing oversight for department instructional activities including time schedule preparation and classroom scheduling; graduate admissions, major and minor advising, financial aid, course and examination administration, faculty teaching assignments, registration, management of student records, long-range planning for the department and developing and implementing departmental policies
  • Partnering with the graduate coordinator, Director for Graduate Studies and Rackham Graduate School to ensure that graduate degree requirements are met
  • Providing direction and guidance to the Graduate Coordinator and students with regards to Rackham Graduate School and Department Policies.
  • Overseeing the distribution of funding via the Financial Aid system to undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Mentoring staff, promoting their professional development, and clearly communicating expectations for their work.
    The SSM will also be responsible for the following:
    • Preparing and managing budgets for all undergraduate and graduate student funding including GSI allocations, endowment funding, and university funding.
    • Overseeing GSRA/GSSA appointments each term and processing benefits.
    • Providing support for GSI Training (includes History Graduate Student Mentor (GSM) hiring and History GSI training course support as well as ELI and CRLT reporting).
    • Managing application process for external (Rackham and other UM) fellowships and competitive financial awards.
    • Compiling data and producing a variety of reports related to the History and Anthro-History PhD programs.
    • Developing and implementing policies and procedures to enhance the support of instructional activities.
    • Working collaboratively with the Directors for Graduate and Undergraduate programs and others to improve the Departments instructional efforts and student relations.
      Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and/or experience. Previous work experience in student services administration. Administrative experience in an academic department including experience with administrative support of instructional activities. The selected candidate should have well-developed attention to detail; superior communication and interpersonal skills, including written communication; general knowledge of issues and concepts related to diversity, inclusion, equity, and social justice; the ability to embrace a creative approach to work. The Student Administration Manager must be able to handle multiple priorities and initiatives at once while also maintaining the teams level of service to faculty, students, and staff. Organizational skills and ability to plan strategically are required. Master's degree in higher education administration, student affairs, or other related discipline. Previous supervisory experience is highly desirable, with a track record of building great teams and bringing out the best in staff. Knowledge of LSA policies and procedures is desirable. Demonstrated experience in building a positive work community among faculty, staff, and students. Experience leading or facilitating DEI initiatives. Experience with Wolverine Access, University reporting tools, Google applications, the GEO contract, and general University policies and procedures helpful. The salary range for this position is $55,600 to $69,500, please note a higher salary may be offered based on equity and the selected candidates experience.
