Duties

The incumbent serves as a full-time staff psychologist in the Spinal Cord Injury/Disorders (SCI/D) Service within the Charlie Norwood VA Healthcare System. The SCI/D Psychologist provides psychological and psychosocial services consistent with contemporary standards of care that is within professional ethics and legal boundaries. Clinical care is provided to veterans, in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. The level of care is complex, often involving co-occurring medical mental health/substance use, and varied social/system support factors. Incumbents work with veterans who are at increased risk of severe difficulties in adjusting to medial conditions, greater incidence of medical/mental health crises; complex social and family dynamics; complicated community support networks.

Direct clinical care includes, but is not limited to: diagnosing mental disorders; conducting psychological and/or neurocognitive assessments; assessing and treating health behavior factors associated with medical conditions; treating mental disorders through a variety of modalities; consultation with other healthcare providers; collaboration with healthcare systems; and providing adjunctive interventions for treatment of mental and medical disorders. Modalities include: individual, family, and group environmental therapies. interventions Specialized interventions such as biofeedback, psychological hypnosis, are additional options based on incumbent's training and experience. Incumbents consult with CNVA Healthcare System staff on a wide variety of patient care issues. Incumbents also collaborate with staff at affiliated medical treatment organizations within and outside the VHA SCI/D system of care.

Examples of clinical care responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Provides a full range of psychodiagnostic services, including psychological assessment of emotional, cognitive, and health behavior functions.
  • Utilizes clinical care consults for specialized treatment of complex psychiatric conditions.
  • Services include individual, couples/family, and group treatments.
  • Provides SCI psychosocial education to patients, family members, and significant others.
  • Ensures that all clinical work is documented accurately and in a timely fashion.
  • Provides clinical care coordination and case management of patients assigned.
  • Provides consultation to professional staff within the Healthcare System and to community providers concerning clinical assessment findings and appropriate treatment plans for patients.
  • Actively collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to include attending team meetings and patient/family meetings.
  • As part of the assignment, the incumbent provides comprehensive intake assessments and crisis interventions; timely responds to clinical care consults, completes mental health and addiction screenings and clinical reminders; evaluates Veterans for suicidal and homicidal ideation, plan and behavior; and ensures that Veterans are linked to indicated treatments in a timely fashion.
  • Consults with Charlie Norwood staff and community providers on a wide variety of patient care issues.
  • May provide collateral supervisory duties primarily for non-professional staff, although a small number of professional staff may be supervised as well (i.e., less than three).
  • Assumes responsibility for professional development by attending relevant training and regularly reviewing the literature to improve clinical competencies and meeting professional continuing education requirements to establish/maintain licensure and clinical competence.
