Modeling and Simulation Engineer III - Plymouth, MN - Hybrid

Daikin Applied is seeking a Modeling and Simulation Engineer III who will support the development and analysis of complex HVAC systems and processes. This role involves creating, refining, and analyzing one-dimensional dynamic and steady-state component and system models. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in 1D modeling techniques and simulation tools, coupled with a passion for problem-solving and innovation.

Location: Hybrid, Plymouth, MN

What you will do:

  • Develop and implement 1D models for various HVAC applications, including but not limited to fluid dynamics, heat transfer, thermodynamics, electrical, and mechanical systems
  • Use simulation tools and software to analyze model behavior and performance of:
  • Generic vapor compression refrigeration systems
  • Different types of heat exchangers e.g. air-refrigeration fin/tube and microchannel
  • Water-source and air-source heat pumps
  • Chiller plants and centrifugal compressors in both steady-state and transient modes
  • Energy recovery systems: heat wheels, air-to-air heat exchangers
  • Data analysis of the systems and components for optimization and automation purposes.
  • Develop modules for automating component and system-level calibration
  • Develop tools for creating and processing performance maps (reduced-order models)
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define requirements and ensure model accuracy
  • Validate and verify models against experimental data and real-world scenarios
  • Document and present findings, providing actionable insights and recommendations
  • Continuously improve modeling methodologies and processes

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Physics, Applied Mathematics, or a related field with 5+ years of experience or a Master's Degree with 2+ years of experience or a PhD
  • Proven experience in 1D modeling and simulation, with a strong understanding of relevant tools and techniques
  • Strong understanding of thermodynamics and heat transfer fundamentals
  • Experience with modeling and design of experiments (DOE)
  • Familiarity with commercial HVAC equipment
  • Proficiency in simulation software such as MATLAB/Simulink, Modelon Impact, GT-Suite, Dymola, VapCyc, CoilDesigner, Simscape, Amesim, or similar tools
  • Solid analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex data
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to present technical information clearly and effectively

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of additional simulation tools or programming languages (e.g., Python, C++, Modelica, EES)
  • Experience with multi-disciplinary modeling and system integration
  • Familiarity with industry standards and best practices
  • Experience with project management.
