Role Summary
The Maxwell Library at Bridgewater State University is seeking a proactive and team-oriented full-time Library Assistant. The Library Assistant III (LA III) will report to the Access Services Manager and work closely with colleagues in the Access Services Department to assist patrons at the library's service desk, via phone, and through online chat. Additionally, the LA III will receive cross-training to provide essential library services, including basic reference assistance, technology support, document delivery, statistical data collection, and other assigned responsibilities.Evening LA III Schedule
Sunday: 2:00 PM - 10:15 PM
Monday-Thursday: 3:00 PM - 11:15 PM
Friday-Saturday: Off
This position is classified under AFSCME and is subject to the terms of the union agreement.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist patrons at our busy service point with all library-related inquiries.
- Exhibit sensitivity and understanding towards students from diverse backgrounds with varying abilities.
- Perform a range of access services tasks and circulation duties, including checking materials in and out, answering phone calls, responding to online inquiries, and processing holds for patrons.
- Execute opening or closing tasks as required for specific shifts.
- Address basic reference and technology-related questions.
- Conduct inventory control tasks, including re-shelving materials, shelf-reading, and assisting with the maintenance of book stacks.
- Guide patrons in the use of the library catalog and online databases.
- Support the recruitment, supervision, and training of student workers.
- Create engaging book and resource displays within the library.
- Participate in library outreach initiatives and university-wide efforts.
- Collect, organize, and prepare monthly statistics related to library services.
- Engage in professional development opportunities to enhance job knowledge.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of two years' experience as a library assistant in an academic or public library, including at least one year in a supervisory role.
- General understanding of library services and operational workflows.
- Commitment to excellence in customer service and support for an equitable, diverse, and inclusive environment.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to interact tactfully with others and provide effective customer service.
- Basic computer proficiency and familiarity with Office 365 or similar productivity software.
- Experience with library systems and equipment commonly found in libraries (e.g., printers, photocopiers, scanners).
- Physical capability to stand for extended periods, bend, stoop, reach, and push heavy book carts (up to 40 lbs).
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate's degree or higher.
- Experience in addressing library reference inquiries.
- Knowledge of library research methodologies, reference materials, and general library services.
- Experience troubleshooting desktop computers and software (e.g., Windows 10, printer and scanner drivers, Microsoft Word and Excel).
- Experience in documenting policies and workflows.
- Experience in training others on processes, workflows, and policies.
