Role Summary

The Maxwell Library at Bridgewater State University is seeking a proactive and team-oriented full-time Library Assistant. The Library Assistant III (LA III) will report to the Manager of Access Services and work closely with colleagues to assist library patrons at the service desk, via phone, and through online chat. Additionally, the LA III will receive cross-training to provide essential library services, including basic reference assistance, technology support, document delivery, and statistical data collection.

Evening LA III Schedule
Sunday: 2:00pm-10:15pm
Monday-Thursday: 3:00pm-11:15pm
Friday-Saturday: Off
This position is classified under AFSCME and adheres to the terms of the union agreement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist patrons with a variety of library-related inquiries at a busy service point.
  • Exhibit sensitivity and understanding towards students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Perform access services tasks, including circulation duties, answering phones, and processing holds.
  • Execute start-up or closing procedures for specific shifts.
  • Address basic reference and technology inquiries.
  • Conduct inventory control tasks, including re-shelving and maintaining book stacks.
  • Guide patrons in utilizing the library catalog and online databases.
  • Support the recruitment, supervision, and training of student workers.
  • Create engaging book and resource displays within the library.
  • Participate in outreach initiatives for the library and university.
  • Compile and prepare monthly library service statistics.
  • Engage in professional development opportunities to enhance job knowledge.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of two years' experience as a library assistant in an academic or public library, including supervisory experience.
  • General understanding of library services and operational workflows.
  • Commitment to providing excellent customer service and fostering an inclusive environment.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to interact tactfully with patrons and deliver effective service.
  • Proficient in computer usage and basic skills with Office 365 or similar software.
  • Familiarity with library systems and equipment.
  • Physical ability to stand for extended periods and manage heavy book carts (up to 40lbs).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate's degree or higher.
  • Experience in answering library reference inquiries.
  • Knowledge of library research methodologies and resources.
  • Experience troubleshooting computer systems and software.
  • Ability to document policies and workflows effectively.
  • Experience in training others on processes and workflows.
