Clinical Research & Development (R&D) Engineer II – Structural Heart

Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Clinical R&D Engineer II to join our Structural Heart team. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for providing engineering leadership in the creation and development of new medical device products. You will be accountable for researching, developing, designing test models, and evaluating mechanical and electro-mechanical materials, components, assemblies, processes and/or equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Utilize multidisciplinary engineering knowledge to design and develop innovative new products in the dynamic structural heart space where Abbott is a leading provider of solutions.
  • Understand user needs and aids in setting appropriate requirements to capture those needs.
  • Perform technical planning and performance evaluation studies.
  • Evaluate prototypes formally and informally through structured and ad hoc testing. Test aspects of new projects or sub-systems to evaluate prototypes and validate output to meet intended use requirements.
  • Evaluate customer satisfaction and device performance through end user testing (simulated use, pre-clinical, and/or usability), analysis and studies.
  • Provide clinical, usability and system level technical guidance and support to teams as appropriate.
  • Evaluate the system user interface (device controls, IFU, training, etc.) formally and informally through structured and ad hoc testing. Tests aspects of the system user interface to evaluate prototype usability with end users and validate user interface is safe and effective.
  • Provide input into the development of clinical system validation plans and the conduct of those tests.
  • Maintain detailed documentation throughout all phases of research and development.
  • Investigate and evaluate existing technologies.
  • Establish and cultivate an extensive network of support to facilitate completion of assignments.
  • Participate in the development of less experienced staff by setting an example, providing guidance and work direction, and offering counsel.
  • Participate in determining goals and objectives for projects and may lead projects.
  • Influence middle management on technical or business solutions.
  • Plan and organize non-routine tasks w/approval.
  • Initiate or maintain work schedule.
  • Establish priorities of work assignments.
  • Exercise judgment in selecting innovative, practical methods to achieve problem resolution.

Qualifications

Required (Must be evident on your resume)

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or other related engineering field. Master's Degree in Biomedical, Mechanical, or Systems Engineering or equivalent preferred.
  • 2+ years of engineering experience, primarily in R&D or clinical engineering
  • Medical device experience
  • Knowledge of statistical techniques and design of experiments
  • Knowledge of human factors engineering
  • Knowledge of animal models and animal study design
  • Knowledge of anatomical model development
  • Experience in a Quality System environment
  • Baseline clinical knowledge of cardiac function.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively integrate information from varied disciplines including Clinical Medicine, Engineering, Marketing and Regulatory Affairs
  • Previous experience working in a highly matrixed and geographically diverse business environment

The base pay for this position is $57,300.00 – $114, In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
