Major duties include, but are not limited to:


Provides administrative, clinical, and programmatic leadership for the pharmacy service to ensure achievement of the clinical, research, and education goals and applicable performance measures.

The incumbent is accountable for the delivery of all health care by the staff of the Pharmacy Service.

Participates in top-level decision and policy design that impacts on Pharmacy Service through collaboration with Medical Center administration, other service chiefs, and interdepartmental Supervisors.

Active participant in meetings of the Medical Center Administration where short and long-range plans and goals are discussed and developed, so that s/he may be fully aware of changes that may have an impact on the Pharmacy Service.

Interacts with a wide variety of internal and external customers. Contacts are made at many varying levels both within the Medical Center, and externally.

Internal Medical Center contacts are to communicate goals, policies/procedures, or strategic courses of action to staff accountable to this position.

External contacts are with other healthcare providers and facilities both within the VA systems as well as within the larger healthcare community, state and federal agencies or departments, affiliated medical centers and universities, and accrediting bodies.

Coordinates the development of patient care interactive programs such as medication counseling, coordinates the development of patient care interactive programs such as medication counseling, medication chart reviews, laboratory drug level reviews, specialized clinics and primary consultations.

Coordinates the maintenance of a Medical Center Drug Formulary in accordance with VHA and VISN policies and regulations. Ensures compliance with all VHA and VISN directives and guidelines concerning the Drug Formulary.
Is the direct front line supervisor over Clinical Pharmacists, Clinical Pharmacy Specialists, Pharmacy Residents, and Pharmacy technicians.

Works with front line supervisors to assure smooth transition of Pharmacy Services in all areas are coordinated between all sections.

Interviews employee candidates, recommends appointments, advancement and all promotions or disciplinary action to the Chief of Pharmacy and the Pharmacy Professional Standards Board as appropriate.

Oversees the maintenance of drug inventory and cost of effective ordering and procurement of all drugs in the pharmacy.

Ensures compliance with all VHA, DEA, OIG, and other Federal procurement regulations regarding prescription drugs and controlled substance accountability and security.

Manages an efficient and effective medication distribution system including outpatient prescription dispensing, unit-dose dispensing, IV admixture services, automated medication replenishment programs, and automated dispensing technology when appropriate.

Works collaboratively with Chief, Pharmacy Service, to develop the annual strategic and budget plan for the service consistent with guidance and goals from the Director's Office and/or Fiscal Service.
