POSITION SUMMARY

A Sterile Processing Intern position is open to students who have completed their first level of a sterile processing program. The student must be in good standing in their program and have demonstrated clinical competence. The sterile processing inter assists in the sterile processing department with preparation of surgical instruments and supplies for the care of the surgical patient. The intern works under the direction of the SPD technician.

ACCOUNTABILITIES

All duties listed below are essential unless noted otherwise

  1. Prepares designated reusable supplies, instruments, etc., in the proper quantity and layout to meet the requirements of physician and medical/surgical needs with minimal errors.
  2. Wraps designated supplies according to technical specifications to ensure sterility during handling and/or through its shelf life.
  3. Picks Surgical Case supplies for upcoming cases using the Surgeon Preference Picklist. Works with Sterile Processing Float Technician to add sterile instruments, complete case cart.
  4. Assists with receiving incoming supplies and restocking supply returns.
  5. Examines all received supplies for expiration dates, package defects, or any visible damage that may compromise sterility. Ensures the general cleaning of department surface areas, racks, shelves, storage bins and all storage areas.
  6. Other related duties as requested.
    Education: Must have completed their first semester of a sterile processing program or completion of an online program didactics. Must be in good standing in their program which refers to a student that has passed required courses, has achieved required GPA, has registered for required courses, and meets clinical attendance requirements.
