Under the direction of the Administrative Nurse, the incumbent is responsible for all management functions related to the delivery of patient care, as well as the quality of nursing practice and the standards of care in the Ortho/Spine Clinic. Supervises and directs all staff and functions in the clinic while maintaining clinical nursing practice skills and clinic specific expertise. Specific duties include managing Human Resources. directing patient care activities. monitoring unit budgets. and participating on departmental and medical center wide performance improvement projects. Serves as a role model and clinical resource to colleagues, staff, patients and others. Incumbent works closely with the manager and medical director to ensure financial success of the clinic.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Supervision: Acts as a coach and positive role model for staff by establishing and maintaining a safe work environment that fosters positive morale. Appropriately monitors and addresses performance issues, applying corrective or disciplinary action when needed. Effectively manages staff in compliance with applicable labor union agreement, and all established policies, procedures and legal guidelines. Ensures effective staffing levels, and handles recruitment and selection for unit. 40%
  • CLIN_Collaborates with staff and members of the healthcare team, ensuring the coordination of care between other disciplines and support staff. Delegates patient care activities to appropriate members of the health care team, provides effective leadership and ensures that care is safe and of high quality. Acts as a source of information and articulately responds to questions, providing resources, guidance, and education about diagnosis and course of treatment. Develops and implements accurate teaching and discharge plans. 10%
  • CLIN_Actively empathizes with patient, expresses compassion and understanding for the situation and demonstrates care which is appropriate for the age, and cultural, religious, or ethnic background. Actively engages in caring behaviors, taking conscious ownership for work and takes deliberate/thoughtful actions regarding how to best carry out relationships with the patient and co-workers. 10%
  • CLIN_ Develops long and short term goals consistent with treatment plans, standards of practice, patient preference and the plan of care. Appropriately utilizes pain scale and other interventions to provide pain relief. Assesses and documents the patient's physical & psychosocial condition, as well as response to care. Reviews patient test results in a timely manner, interpreting and communicating results in a manner consistent with the age of the patient and correlates information into the plan of care. Consistently ensures nursing practice is evidence based, within scope of licensure and compliant with hospital wide standards of nursing care. 20%
  • CLIN_ Administers patient medications, treatments and procedures in a safe, effective and age appropriate manner. Recognizes critical deviations in patient conditions, taking appropriate action and documenting intervention. Effectively collaborates with the health care team to intervene, and advocate as necessary. Intervenes appropriately in instances of abuse, assault or neglect, or when adequate financial or social resources are not available. Makes appropriate referrals to resolve patient issues effectively. 20%

Required Qualifications:

  • Understanding of Joint Commission and other applicable regulatory requirements
  • Strong customer service orientation as well as written and oral communication skills
  • Must possess the skill, knowledge and ability essential to the successful performance of assigned duties
  • Must demonstrate customer service skills appropriate to the job
  • Minimum 3 years experience as a nurse
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively supervise and motivate staff through prior lead or supervisory experience
  • Complete understanding of acuity levels for the patient population
  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing
  • All external candidates must have a Bachelor of Science in Nursing
  • Ability to work variable shifts including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Ability to read, write and communicate effectively in English
  • Ability to maintain flexibility and work well in a fast paced, constantly changing environment
  • Ability to maintain a work pace appropriate to the workload
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across the Health System


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of University and medical center organizations, policies, procedures and forms
  • Bilingual skills to communicate effectively with patients and families
  • ACLS certified or eligibility for certification

  • BLS (Required)
