Job Description

Legal Counsel, Employment Law

The Legal Counsel, Employment Law, will provide legal advice to Rockwell Automation's Human Resources function and business leaders in a wide variety of employment law matters.

The role calls for a trusted advisor who understands Rockwell Automation's strategic initiatives and provides legal support that supports growth, mitigates risk, and assures compliance.

As a subject matter expert on issues related to employment law and HR compliance, the Legal Counsel, Employment Law will be responsible for providing legal advice for matters arising throughout the employee life-cycle, including, for example, background checks, accommodations and leaves of absence, and discipline and termination decisions. The Legal Counsel, Employment Law will also provide guidance in developing and implementing global and local strategies and coordinated action plans to support compliance and risk mitigation, including wage and hour, benefits, and federal contract compliance requirements. The role may also be responsible for investigations into and drafting responses to complaints of discrimination or non-compliance. This role will be highly collaborative across multiple functions and business units to support HR compliance activities.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide proactive counseling on employment law compliance. Provide daily advice on matters such as background checks, accommodation requests, discipline and discharge to maintain compliance with employment laws;
  • Conduct investigations into allegations of discrimination or non-compliance;
  • Draft responses to agency charges of discrimination and prepare submissions in response to government audits;
  • Manage outside counsel in connection with federal court litigation;
  • Revise policies and procedures regarding a variety of human resources and employment law topics;
  • Monitor new and evolving employment laws globally, proactively define required actions and implement compliance initiatives;
  • Serve as legal counsel for Rockwell Automation's Human Resources function, understanding and supporting strategic business objectives and acting as a trusted advisor and business partner in achieving these objectives.

Basic Qualifications

  • Law degree from an accredited university
  • Admission in good standing to the bar of at least one state in the United States
  • Legal authorization to work in the US is required. We will not sponsor individuals for employment visas, now or in the future, for this job opening.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Typically requires a minimum of five years of law firm or in-house experience with a focus on employment law;
  • Proven skills in drafting position statements in response to allegations of discrimination;
  • Experience conducting investigations into employee complaints;
  • Experience providing proactive counseling, particularly regarding accommodations and discipline or termination decisions;
  • Experience preparing affirmative action plans for federal contract compliance is a plus;
  • Experience with employment aspects of mergers and acquisitions is a plus;
  • Sound legal and business judgment; ability to balance risk with legal and business considerations;
  • Excellent communication skills;
  • Uncompromising ethics.
