General Summary:

The Financial Controller (Manager) is a key member of Vertex's CFO organization and reporting to the Finance Controller (Director). The role partners closely with members of the Finance and Controllers Organization. The Manager continuously assesses the business value and efficiency of the processes, policies, and procedures to make an effective work environment and support lean and agile finance organization and mitigate risks on a global basis. The role spans supporting Finance across Research, Development, Manufacturing, Commercial and G&A.

This position is based in our Boston, MA office, located in the Seaport area. This role requires a hybrid work schedule: 3 days in office & 2 days remote on a weekly basis.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide guidance and partner with Finance for SOX compliance control requirements, flux analysis and month-end/quarter-end accruals.
  • Liaison between the Finance Team, Internal Audit, Accounting and external auditors on various on-going projects with a focus on enhancing the month-end close, streamlining existing processes, establishing a center of excellence for Finance and enterprise-wide growth mindset.
  • Leads the quarterly flux review with Finance and Accounting.
  • Manage evolving our financial internal controls and governance policies and processes to support Vertex's current operations and future growth.
  • Assist in system implementations and integration efforts for new BD and collaborations.
  • Coordinates with other members of the CFO organization including Corporate Finance, International Finance and Accounting to maintain a continuous improvement mindset and promote strong communication and efficient processes.
  • Collaborates cross functionally to ensure consistency and effectiveness of management reporting across Finance and Accounting.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Strong business acumen, judgment and knowledge of the company's markets/products and industry trends.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, and an eagerness to collaboration with colleagues in sharing insights/learnings and partnering to ensure timely execution of project plans.
  • Possesses a continuous improvement mindset, with flexibility and ability to adapt to change.
  • This role requires specialized skills including proficiency in US GAAP accounting topics and SOX requirements.
  • Expertise with Excel and PowerPoint.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance or Accounting.
  • CPA or Public Accounting experience
  • Experience with forecasting and/or P&L ownership
  • 5+ years of relevant finance and industry experience - Biotechnology/Pharmaceutical industry experience preferred
