Job Description

Primary Function of Position:

We are looking for a hands-on, technically solid engineer to support advanced product development. The successful candidate has a track record on multidisciplinary teams from product concept through market launch. This person participates in creating system-wide robotic architecture and designing complex mechanical subsystems. This person has the proven ability to map out schedules and work assignments, drive teams through concept and development, and play an effective, hands-on role in solving challenging technical problems.

The successful candidate will utilize creativity and sound engineering judgment to design medical capital equipment components for volume manufacturing processes. They are expected to use engineering and systematic skills to conceptualize, develop, and verify new mechanical designs. They are responsible for key system components and will interface with suppliers and manufacturing to build high-quality hardware prototypes and produce new designs. They should be capable of making sound conclusions when faced with time constraints and ambiguous or incomplete information typical of research and development.

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Designing components and producing mechanical drawings in an FDA-regulated environment for volume manufacturing processes, including cast metal, injection-molded plastic, sheet metal stamped and others.
  • Define architecture for motor-driven manipulator designs for Robotic Design.
  • Working within multi-disciplinary teams to define requirements for new and current designs.
  • Rapid development and iteration of full-scale prototypes of candidate architectures to satisfy requirements.
  • Developing mechanical assemblies with careful consideration for key functions and safety.
  • Designing test methodologies and fixtures to develop a deeper understanding of key technical challenges and verify and refine designs.
  • Examine and test product designs. Including the development of DOEs, data collection, and data analysis.
  • Create product functional and design specifications.
  • Vendor liaison to design new components with supplier inputs
  • Develop fixtures, alignment tools, and processes to assemble products.
  • Develop and perform component and subsystem verification tests and data collection.
  • Collaborate to attract top talent and invest in mentorship and training to retain and support the career development of team members.
  • Provide leadership by example to the mechanical engineering team and help foster an environment that encourages creativity, risk-taking, and crisp execution
  • Navigate complex technical and programmatic situations by driving timely decision-making and setting appropriate priorities to focus the team on success.
  • Support best practices for mechanical design while coaching and mentoring engineers
  • Observe clinical cases and participate in interviews with clinical experts to inform designs.
  • Facilitate hardware and software integration of new prototypes and new products, including surgical instruments and robotic manipulators.
  • Support production of the final product by troubleshooting processes and component problems
  • Provide engineering support to Manufacturing, Materials, Test Engineering, and Services to facilitate the transfer of designs.
  • Document and communicate intellectual property.
  • Develop Design History Files per FDA requirements.
  • Self-driven to achieve personal and collaborative results in a high-energy, small, focused team environment, maintain a proven sense of shared responsibility and reward, and foster a positive and encouraging group culture.
  • Comfortable with ambiguity and able to build clarity and consensus among cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Understanding of engineering materials, component selection criteria, and design for reliability and manufacturability.
  • Communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to clearly present to larger groups
