Pathologists' Assistant

The University of Illinois Hospital & Clinics (UI Health) is seeking a Pathologists' Assistant. The Pathologists' Assistant is engaged in all phases of gross description and dissection of human tissue, surgical specimens, human postmortem examinations and provides instruction to residents.

Essential Responsibilities:

Gross Description and Dissection

  • Perform and dictate gross examination of biopsies and surgical specimens.
  • Perform grossing of nearly all biopsy specimens and as requested, assist residents in the grossing of surgical specimens. As directed, instruct residents in methods of gross examination.
  • Supervise the grossing room for compliance with environmental and biological hazards.
  • Maintain grossing and autopsy rooms properly stocked with necessary tools and materials.
  • Maintain records of surgical pathology specimen dissections and dictation; label and store gross tissue specimens.
  • Procure and process specimens for tissue banking purposes.

Human Postmortem Examinations

  • Assist residents and faculty members in performing autopsies, including pre- and post-preparation of the bodies. Assist with eviscerations, gross anatomic dissection, and in obtaining appropriate sections for microscopic examination; assist in training of techniques and procedures to staff interns and residents.
  • Remove organs, portions of bone, or other samples of tissues for specialized study or research; collect special materials for decalcification and for toxicological, viral and bacteriological assays.
  • Maintain records; files x-rays; maintain facilities; label and store gross tissue obtained during autopsy.
  • Photograph specimen samples as appropriate for use in instruction and documentation. Maintain complete and accurate records of all gross photographs.

Student Instruction/Evaluation

  • Teach pathologist assistant students.
  • Assist with performance evaluations of staff members, residents, and fellows.
  • Write, document and maintain departmental procedures.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.

Requirements include:

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Masters of Health Science in Pathologists' Assistant or Master of Science in Pathologists' Assistant preferred.
  • Minimum of four (4) years' experience as a Pathologists' Assistant required.
  • Certification eligible or certification as a Pathologists Assistant preferred.
  • Must have an operational knowledge of Pathology systems (Systems currently interfaced with Sunquest and Pathnet include Patient Management, Gemini, Medipac, and Winstation software, as examples).
