Licensed Speech Pathologist (SLP)


Under the guidance of the Office of Diverse Learner Supports and Services and in partnership with school leadership, Speech-Language Pathologists are tasked with delivering speech and language assessment and therapeutic services to students. This role includes collaboration with parents and school personnel, as well as active participation in multidisciplinary teams.

Speech-Language Pathologists are allocated to schools based on the district's overall needs. Job responsibilities encompass general and special education services, evaluations, staffing, and mandated therapeutic interventions.

Key Responsibilities:


Possess a valid license from the Illinois State Board of Education and the Illinois Department of Professional Regulations endorsed as a Speech Pathologist.

Conduct diagnostic evaluations for students requiring initial assessments, re-evaluations, or specialized evaluations, and engage in all relevant meetings to determine eligibility and service adequacy on an annual or as-needed basis.
Assist students facing a variety of speech and language challenges to achieve academic success.

SLPs engage in prevention, assessment, intervention, and program design efforts that are seamlessly integrated within the school curriculum alongside teachers, parents, and other key stakeholders.

Oversee required supervisory duties for Clinical Fellows and practicum students as assigned.
Maintain precise records and adhere to established departmental protocols and procedures.

All clinicians involved in the Health Services Management Program (HSMP) must comply with all program policies and procedures as outlined in the ChildServe User Manual and the HSMP Reference Manual to ensure comprehensive service delivery, accurate documentation, and timely reporting of student services.

Essential Duties:

Within the framework of the CPS for Speech-Language Pathologists, all SLPs should engage in a continuous improvement process to enhance their practice.
Each Speech-Language Pathologist is expected to:

- Deliver therapeutic services to eligible students through various service delivery models;
- Provide diagnostic assessment services in accordance with established eligibility and exit criteria;
- Develop and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) that align with educational standards;
- Participate in necessary Domain, Problem Solving, FIE, and Annual Review meetings as required;
- Offer consultation to educators, parents, and staff;
- Conduct training sessions for school staff and parents;
- Program and utilize augmentative and alternative communication systems;
- Engage in activities that bolster students' educational experiences;
- Attend regional and departmental meetings;
- Complete compliance tasks such as daily progress notes, weekly service documentation, quarterly IEP report cards, and monthly caseload statistics;
- Demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills, strong interpersonal abilities, and sound professional judgment, particularly in interactions with administration, colleagues, families, and students;
- Prioritize student safety by consistently implementing the Student Code of Conduct and school-wide management systems;
- Tailor student support through effective use of curriculum supplements and technological resources, as available;

- Advocate for the district's vision and uphold our commitment to equity, cultural competence, high expectations, developmental appropriateness, and the individual needs of students, including those with special requirements.

Minimum Qualifications:

- A graduate degree in communication disorders or speech pathology from an accredited institution.
- Completion of the CPS online application process.
- A valid license or credential from the state licensing board, with the appropriate endorsements for the position.
- Willingness to travel to various school locations as needed.

Physical Requirements:

Light Work:

Involves exerting up to twenty (20) pounds of force occasionally, up to ten (10) pounds of force frequently, or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.

Employment Expectations:


As a condition of employment with Chicago Public Schools, employees must be residents of the City of Chicago or agree to relocate within six months of employment.

For specific high-need positions, exemptions to this policy may be considered.

All new hires must successfully complete all CPS onboarding requirements, which include passing a tuberculosis test, drug screening, and state and federal criminal background checks.
