Visiting Assistant Professor - Department of History, Eberly College of Arts and Sciences- 23501
Description

The History Department in the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences at West Virginia University invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor of History with an area of specialization in Public History starting August 16, 2024. This is a 9-month, full-time position with full benefits. The initial appointment is for two years with the possibility of a 1-year renewal.

The teaching load is five courses over the course of the academic year. The successful candidate will be expected to teach classes that complement the History Department's current offerings at the undergraduate and graduate levels, including in public history, historic preservation, local history research methods, cultural resource management and in their other area(s) of expertise.

The WVU History Department coordinates a dynamic and successful number of programs: the BA, MA, and PhD in History, MA in Public History, the graduate certificate in Cultural Resource Management, and the BA in Social Studies Secondary Education. The Public History program was started in 1979 and prepares MA and PhD students for a wide range of careers in museums, building and site preservation, archives and libraries, historic site preservation and interpretation, federal government, consultancy work, development, and administration. The Cultural Resource Management certificate curriculum complements the Public History M.A. curriculum and is open to those outside of the history discipline. The program trains students in federal laws and legal compliance, cultural resource and materials management, and historic preservation. Through partnerships with the National Park Service, campus museums and archives, the West Virginia Department of Culture and History, and local and regional entities, the Public History program provides professional hands-on experiences for students.

WVU is a R1 research land grant university located within 90 minutes of Pittsburgh and 3.5 hours from the Washington/Baltimore area. Morgantown has been recognized as one of the most livable small cities in the U.S. There are extensive recreational opportunities, excellent public schools, and a supportive University environment in which to develop a visible and productive career. The WVU Dual Career Program is available to assist candidates with suitable employment opportunities for spouses or partners.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will contribute to the graduate programs in History and Public History, the graduate certificate program in Cultural Resource Management, as well as the undergraduate program in History. The successful candidate must 1) hold a Ph.D. in History by time of appointment. 2) Demonstrate ability to teach public history and cultural resource management courses at undergraduate and graduate levels. 3) Have at least one of the following.
