Role Overview:
Provide legal counsel for the Bureau of Motor Vehicle' provide sound and timely legal advise to agency departmental representatives. Incumbent is charged with ensuring complaince with all state, federal laws and statutes.

Salary Statement:
The salary for this position traditionally starts at $85,020.00.

A Day in the Life:

  • Support General Counsel in the advising of BMV departments on legal issues, applicable laws and policies, and potential resolutions;
  • Litigating administrative hearings with the Office of Administrative Law Proceedings;
  • Formulating a recommended solution that is workable within the structure of motor vehicle laws;
  • Interpreting court orders and providing legal advice regarding the management of driver and vehicle records;
  • Researching recent legal decisions and changes in Federal and State motor vehicle laws;
  • Receiving Customer communications, investigating any issues and formulating proper resolutions;
  • Responding to correspondence concerning legal matters;
  • Advising Driver Ability, Credentials, and Fraud & Security Enforcement departments on legal matters;
  • Assisting department supervisors with reviewing and editing their departments' policies;
  • Reviewing and editing contracts and Memorandums of Understanding between the BMV and other State Agencies;
  • Reviewing and editing BMV notices and state forms;
  • Participating in continuing legal education programs; and
  • Performing additional legal assignments as needed.

What You'll Need for Success:

  • Doctorate of Jurisprudence;
  • Indiana Bar Admission; license in good standing;
  • Strong legal research, writing and litigation skills;
  • Strong communication and public speaking skills;
  • Demonstrated strong knowledge and ability relevant statutes, caselaw and rules.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of all functions of the Bureau of Motor Vehicle;
  • Strong interpersonal skills; and
  • Thorough knowledge of and ability to research, interpret and apply federal and state laws and regulations

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:
This role may serve as a team lead for an assigned work group.
This role provides direct supervision for two or more attorneys.
