SENIOR ESTIMATOR

In the position of Senior Estimator, your key responsibilities will include:

  • Read and interpret project specifications and plans to prepare detailed, comprehensive, and accurate quantity surveys
  • Perform conceptual estimating based on preliminary project parameters
  • Prepare project estimates covering self-performed work, subcontracted work, and general requirements
  • Understand project timelines and related deadlines
  • Maintain up-to-date information on products, vendors, and subcontractors
  • Conduct subcontractor/supplier bid solicitation and coordination
  • Offer input to the project team regarding project schedule

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Four-year degree in Construction Engineering or Construction Management
  • 10+ years of experience in construction and estimating
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and time management abilities
  • Meticulous attention to detail
  • Capacity to prioritize and handle multiple tasks within time constraints
  • Self-motivated and able to work with minimal supervision
  • Proficient in computer skills
  • Prior experience with Bluebeam or On-Screen takeoff
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Excel
  • Prior oversight of Estimator I and/or Estimator II work

Preferred:

  • Over 10 years of participation in estimating commercial and industrial construction projects
  • Professional designation (e.g., CPE, LEED AP, DBIA, CPC, etc.)
  • Demonstrated ability to cultivate productive relationships with project partners, subcontractors, and vendors

Office and Travel:

Office: The role is based at the Corporate or Regional office, with periodic visits to potential contract sites.

Travel: Occasional overnight travel is required

Responsibilities and Tasks:

Estimating and Bidding:

  • Oversight of the Take-off process
    • Existing conditions/temporary provisions
    • Substructure (single-sided forms, deep foundations, etc.)
    • Structure (structural concrete, system connections, etc.)
    • Exterior Enclosure - Masonry (assessment of labor risk)
    • Enhancement of take-off techniques and strategies
    • Guidance and support to Estimator I and Estimator II roles
  • Bid Card Development
    • Management of bid cards and scopes (addressing gaps and overlaps)
    • Enhancement of bid card strategies
    • Coaching for roles of Estimator I and Estimator II
  • Estimating Tools
    • Familiarity with iTWO Cost X estimating platform and templates
    • Customization of estimate template based on project needs
    • Utilization of value analysis log & generation of items
    • Creating estimates with ICAT
    • Exploration and adoption of new tools
    • Development and upkeep of conceptual pricing guide
    • Development and maintenance of productivity guide
  • Communication
    • Effective communication with subcontractors (knowing the right questions to ask)
    • Attendance at Design Team and owner meetings
    • Sound knowledge of constructability
    • Generation of RFI's
    • Evaluation of schedules
    • On-site visits: evaluating production rates, constructability, schedule, time studies, etc.
    • Marketing - interviews, miscellaneous communications
    • Creation of training and mentoring programs
    • Execution of PACE process
    • Visits for Estimator I/Estimator II positions
  • Pricing
    • Evaluation of cost history
    • General comprehension of unit prices
    • Self-perform pricing
    • Considerations for general conditions, weather, hoisting, etc.
    • Development of estimates
    • CD/DD estimates
    • SD/DD estimates
    • Conceptual estimates
    • Review and approval of estimates
    • Unit pricing for building/room types
    • Pricing for components and MEP
    • Macro-level value analysis
    • Crew production rates
  • Estimate Development
    • Completion of various estimates across all levels
    • Resource management (internal and external)
    • Expanded knowledge in pricing, constructability, and scheduling
    • Strong presentation abilities
    • Management of the estimating team
    • Understanding of contract types

Pursuit and Business Development:

  • Support the pursuit team in comprehending potential projects and requirements
  • Research prospective clients
  • Assist in formulating responses to RFQs and RFPs alongside the pursuit team
  • Participate in pursuit interviews
  • Contribute to preconstruction meetings

McGough Self-Performed Work:

  • Conduct quantity take-offs and aid in estimating labor, materials, and equipment
  • Understanding of warehouse equipment, rentals, small tools, services, and associated costs
  • Information gathering, implementation, or assistance in PACE preparation and projections
  • Material bid scoping (concrete, rebar, brick, etc.)
  • Support in creating Critical Path Method (CPM) schedules for self-performed work

Scheduling:

  • Collaborate with field staff to develop CPM schedules
  • Work closely with field staff to update and distribute schedules as required
  • Co-lead Last Planner initiatives in collaboration with field staff

Other Responsibilities:

  • Engage in company business development activities (client functions, design firm open houses, conferences, etc.)
  • Cultivate relationships with clients, architects, engineers, consultants, and subcontractors
  • Develop new relationships with potential clients and design firms
  • Attend project management and other company meetings
  • Participate in relevant training for personal and professional development, including human resources management
  • Active involvement in company-sponsored events
  • Adhere to and promote work standards
  • Participate in Lean events and uphold the McGough Way
  • Perform any other assigned responsibilities

Physical Requirements:

The physical demands of this role include sitting for extended periods at the workstation and during meetings, as well as while traveling by plane or car. Ability to lift up to 20 pounds as necessary, dexterity for writing and computer use, clear hearing and speaking, and color differentiation for graphs and charts. Site visits may involve exposure to dirt, dust, uneven terrain, outdoor elements, and varying temperatures, requiring mobility such as climbing ladders, walking on uneven surfaces, and navigating long distances and stairs.
