Position Specific Description

Additional responsibilities for this role post-licensure will involve:

  • Monitoring and regulating Reactor Power and Main Generator Output
  • Overseeing plant systems from the Control Room, interpreting data, and applying comprehensive system knowledge
  • Reacting to plant indicators and alarms following plant procedures, including identifying emergency conditions and taking necessary actions
  • Executing operations in line with administrative procedures and NRC license requirements, such as shift turnovers and log upkeep
  • Coordinating surveillance activities with field operators
  • Formulating and executing operational procedures
  • Identifying and rectifying deficiencies through the station's Corrective Action program
  • Assisting in reactor refueling during planned outages
  • Participating in ongoing training sessions
  • Aiding in developing and implementing training programs
Job Overview

The primary role of the control operator (CO) is to gain the knowledge, skills, and experience necessary to qualify for Licensed Operator responsibilities and pass the NRC's Reactor Operator's License examination. The CO works under the supervision of Operating Supervisor or other licensed personnel. The CO engages in simulator, classroom, and on-the-job training. It is essential for the CO to acquire expertise in operating plant equipment from the control room and understanding key aspects like station design, plant license basis, FSAR, operating instructions, procedures, and safety regulations. Success in examinations and demonstrating progress are vital for the CO. The CO is assigned to training and expected to work varied shifts when required.

This role is under the representation of IBEW Local 2150

Licenses/Certifications:

The CO must display consistent progress towards obtaining an NRC Reactor Operator's License. Failure to do so after two attempts will result in the employee reverting to the Auxiliary Operator role and receiving the corresponding wage adjustments. The employee will only be considered for CO vacancies again after meeting stipulated waiting period and necessary certifications.

  • The candidate should hold a high school diploma or equivalent and possess at least three years of power plant experience, with a minimum of one year at Point Beach Nuclear Plant. Additionally, the applicant must have spent at least six months as an Auxiliary Operator at Point Beach Nuclear Plant or hold similar qualifications at another commercial nuclear facility
  • Unescorted access to the nuclear plant in compliance with NRC security requirements
  • Passing the Plant Operator Selection System - Nuclear (POSS) test
  • Fulfilling all relevant medical requirements
