Anchorage is Alaska's largest cosmopolitan city with a population of almost 300,000 with a rich cultural life on the ancestral lands of the Dena'ina people. There is an active arts community with the Anchorage Symphony Orchestra, Anchorage Opera, Anchorage Concert Association, Anchorage Concert Chorus, several dance companies, and an array of community theater organizations. The Anchorage Museum of History and Art, the Alaska Native Heritage Center, the Heritage Museum and the Alaska Aviation Museum provide a variety of cultural events.

The University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) is one of three campuses and serves over 20,000 students. The UAA Music Department offers two degree programs: a Bachelor of Art in Music, and a Bachelor of Music with emphases in Performance or Education. Students wanting to obtain a teacher certification in music must apply for a one-year graduate program (Master of Arts in Teaching) to the University of Alaska Southeast.

Minimum Qualifications:

Length of time and type of experience required for this position should be appropriate to the rank of tenure-track assistant professor. University-level teaching experience both online and in the classroom. Applicants should have a record of research, successful performing history or other creative activities of distinction.

Wind Ensemble directing experience is an asset.

Evidence of public school teaching in music is preferred.

A terminal degree in Music Education (DME, Ph.D.). ABD candidates will be considered. Degree must be conferred prior to the start date in August 2024.

Position Details:

This is a full-time, 9-month, tenure track, faculty position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. UA provides a generous compensation package that includes retirement options, annual leave, 12 paid holidays per year, tuition waivers for employees and family members, and affordable medical, dental and vision care coverage, and representation under a Collective Bargaining Unit. The expected start date will be in August 2024. Salary will be based upon applicable academic preparation and experience. This position will be working at the Anchorage campus. This is not a remote position.

Responsibilities: Teaching, service, and research/creative activity.

Teaching includes undergraduate and graduate music education courses, applied instruction; and other classes depending on the qualifications of the applicant and needs of the department.

Service includes departmental, university, and community service, including coordinating the music-teacher education program, supervising music education student interns and recruiting students.

Research/creative activity can include music-education research, publication, presentations, performance, or composition.

The successful candidate will also hold the Davies-Meyers Professorship of Music, a multi-year position with special funding for creative activity and professional development.
