Job Information

Florida International University College of Law Library seeks a creative, enthusiastic, and innovative law librarian to join our team as a Visiting Law Librarian. This is an open-rank position which provides reference, research, outreach, and instructional services offered by FIU Law Library through its Library Services department. This position is responsible for creating and developing FIU Law Library reference and research materials, including outreach and social media content, research guides, and tutorials.

The Visiting Law Librarian can teach for-credit legal research and technology skills courses offered from FIU Law Library. This position provides subject-specific and legal research instruction, supporting Legal Skills and Values, experiential and seminar courses, as well as co-curricular and extra-curricular programs. As a member of a forward-thinking library valued for its responsive and evolving services, the successful candidate will have practical librarianship experience and a dedication to innovation in the provision of law library services.

Details
One (1) year appointment as FIU visiting faculty librarian, renewable for a second year. This appointment is like a visiting assistant professor role typical at U.S. law schools.
Those enrolled in either an ALA-accredited master's program and/or ABA-accredited juris doctor or equivalent law degree program are eligible. Visitors can continue their program(s) of study during the visiting appointment.
Visitors benefit from mentorship and networking opportunities amongst South Florida law librarians across government, firm, and academic practice areas.
Visitors are provided professional development support. Both financial and comp time support are available to engage in AALL or similar professional development opportunities. Visitors will be mentored and supported in their professional goals to attend and/or present at symposia, conferences, or other career-building events.
Flexible work arrangements are available. Work location and hours can be customized to support the visitor's continued course of study and personal needs/preferences. FIU Law Library librarians do not have night, weekend, or holiday reference desk staffing requirements.
Responsibilities
Provides research consultations to FIU Law students, faculty, and administration responsive to legal research and cross-disciplinary needs; develops specialized research expertise as needed in support of the scholarship and teaching of FIU Law faculty.
Creates research guides, specialized course resources and research resources in print and electronic formats.
Provides reference services via in-person and virtual modes to support the mission and scholarly pursuits of the FIU community, responding to inquiries from students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
Conducts outreach programs tailored for student and faculty engagement.
Provides instruction via programs and workshops, guest lectures in FIU Law and FIU courses.
Trains students, faculty and staff in legal research sources, techniques and technology through lectures and research guides.
Teaches for-credit courses as assigned and budgeted. Law Librarians teach for-credit FIU courses as Adjunct Professors and are compensated separately for those courses.
Explores new and emerging legal research methods and technologies, including those supporting data and analytics research.
Identifies new resources and maintains current awareness services related to law librarianship, legal education and pedagogy, and substantive legal subjects.
Contributes to the COL, the profession and grows professionally through substantive involvement in committee work, research, publishing and/or participation in professional organizations at national, regional, section, and local levels.
Participates in law library outreach initiatives.
Participates in collection development activities and makes recommendations in keeping with lowering the cost of education principles.
Serves as liaison to legal research resource vendors.
Qualifications
JD from ABA accredited institution, or equivalent. Candidates enrolled in a terminal degree program are eligible and can continue their course of study while visiting.
MLIS from ALA accredited institution. Candidates enrolled in a terminal degree program are eligible and can continue their course of study while visiting.
Ability to conduct legal research and provide reference services leveraging electronic resources.
Knowledge of legal resources, print and electronic, and digital legal research systems.
