Main Purpose of Job

This position will function as a full-performance Laboratory Scientist in the Maryland Cannabis Administration (MCA)'s Office of Laboratory Services (OLS)' Reference Laboratory, located at 6200 Seaforth Street, Suite B, Baltimore, Maryland This position will perform a variety of laboratory tests in analytical and environmental chemistry, as well as in diagnostic and environmental microbiology.\r

Additionally, this position will supervise, schedule, assign, and evaluate the work and training of lower-level Public Health Laboratory Scientists who perform the same assays, along with other lower-level laboratory employees. This position will also supervise and coordinate the daily operation of public health laboratory testing, as well as the accuracy and reliability of pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical testing. Furthermore, this position will be responsible for supervising the acceptance, rejection and appropriateness of test specimens and samples, in addition to the safe handling, containment, manipulation, and disposal of infectious microorganisms, radiochemicals, and hazardous chemicals.�\r

To add on, this position will produce and supervise the production of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and quality assurance manuals, while using specialized software, in accordance with SOPs, to interpret and report any findings and/or quarterly reported data. This position will also be responsible for identifying and developing testing costs and budgets, including troubleshooting laboratory testing and the maintenance and repair of laboratory instruments to recommend the purchase of laboratory equipment. Finally, this position will be responsible for overseeing quality control and quality assurance measures; the individual and collaborative continuance of quality improvement processes; and the review of action logs, customer complaints, and quality assurance and control problems, in order to enforce federal and State standards and regulatory requirements for medical and environmental laboratories.\r

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry; Biology; Biotechnology; Chemistry; Genetics; Immunology; Microbiology; Molecular Biology; Medical Technology; Pharmacy; or Zoology, from an accredited college or university.\r
Experience: Four years of experience working in a chemistry laboratory performing analytical tests on environmental, biological or multi-matrix samples; or four years of experience working in a medical or public health laboratory performing diagnostic or public health testing on human specimens.\r
Notes:\r
1. Candidates may substitute additional graduate education at an accredited college or university, at the rate of 30 credit hours in the above noted disciplines for each year of the required experience, for up to two years of the required experience. \r
2.�Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a Commissioned Officer in Health Science Research Officer classifications, or Medical Laboratory Specialists specialty codes in the Science-related field of work, on a year-for-year basis, for the required education.\r

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The desired candidate should have laboratory management experience, as well as professional experience working with mass spectrometry. The desired candidate should also be able to demonstrate evidence of scientific writing and presentation skills. Finally, the desired candidate should have an extensive background in analytical chemistry.�\r
