Job Req ID:
Clinical Laboratory Coordinator
The Pathology Department is in search of a dedicated professional who, under the guidance of the laboratory supervisor or Faculty/Principal Investigator, conducts a range of both standard and intricate clinical and research laboratory evaluations. In the absence of a Laboratory Manager, this role serves as the primary technical authority for other laboratory personnel and oversees the daily operations of the designated laboratory, which includes managing workload and staff schedules, ensuring quality control, maintaining inventory, and overseeing equipment upkeep in accordance with the divisional quality assurance standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Engage actively in laboratory testing within the Immunofluorescence Laboratory, which encompasses tasks such as specimen accessioning, grossing of small samples, frozen tissue sectioning, and performing immunofluorescence staining using both manual and automated techniques.
- Oversee daily laboratory activities, ensuring proper documentation, tracking project statuses, and managing billing outcomes in compliance with regulations.
- Utilize analytical skills to operate technical equipment, execute tests with precision, and correlate test results with normal health indicators and disease presence. Contribute to the specification, design, implementation, and enhancement of Immunofluorescence-related projects.
- Prepare testing plans to uphold quality and data integrity.
- Facilitate the training of new staff, manage workload and staff scheduling, and participate in performance evaluations, recruitment, and hiring processes for laboratory personnel. Provide orientation, training, and development for the laboratory team.
- Conduct quality assurance procedures, including equipment monitoring and maintenance, antibody quality checks, and troubleshooting. Report any discrepancies in quality assurance in accordance with established procedures. Assist in the formulation and revision of laboratory policies and procedures, ensuring readiness for regulatory reviews.
Essential Skills and Qualifications:
- Attention to detail and precision in all tasks.
- Strong analytical skills to operate technical equipment and perform tests accurately, with the ability to interpret results in relation to health and disease.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with healthcare professionals and other personnel. Capable of organizing and prioritizing tasks while following through on assignments. Proven ability to work collaboratively in a high-volume, dynamic laboratory environment.
Work Environment:
- This position may require remaining stationary (sitting or standing) for up to 65% of the time. Occasional movement throughout the laboratory to retrieve equipment, supplies, or specimens may be necessary.
- Visual acuity is essential for tasks such as viewing computer screens, examining documents, and closely inspecting specimens.
- Laboratory work may involve exposure to hazardous materials, but adherence to safety protocols minimizes risks. The environment may present discomforts such as odors, noise, and temperature variations.
- Staff may need to transport equipment and supplies weighing less than 40 pounds, with the potential to lift or move up to 50 pounds with appropriate training and precautions.
- Annual competency reviews are required, along with compliance with all relevant policies and regulations.
- Laboratory operations may run 24/7, necessitating flexible scheduling, including day, evening, or night shifts, with potential weekend and holiday assignments.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Education: BA/BS or equivalent in Biology, Chemistry, Histology, or a related field.
- Three (3) years of experience in a laboratory setting is required.
- A Master's Degree with relevant graduate research may substitute for experience as per the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Certification from ASCP is preferred but not mandatory.
