Department Overview

The Interpretive Services department at Children's Minnesota plays a crucial role in bridging linguistic and cultural gaps in healthcare.



Position Summary
  • Provide interpretation services during patient encounters.
  • Offer sight translation assistance to patients and staff.
  • Deliver phone interpretation for families and staff of Children's.
  • Facilitate communication across diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Adhere to NCIHC medical interpreter standards and code of ethics.
  • Respond to emergent needs and support teams.


License/Certification/Registration:
  • Minimum of 40 hours of interpreter training, required.
  • Membership in statewide MDH roster for interpreters, required.
  • National Certification (NBCMI or CCHI/CMI), preferred.


Education:
  • High School diploma or GED, required; Bachelor's degree or Associate degree, preferred.
  • Education in languages, translation, interpretation or related fields, required.
  • Certificate in Medical Interpreting, preferred.
  • Completion of credentials in medical interpreting.


Experience:
  • Minimum of 40 hours of interpreter training, required.
  • Advanced High or Superior rating on the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) in English and Target Language, preferred.
  • Two years of interpreting experience in healthcare, preferred.
  • Previous experience in healthcare or language services, preferred.


Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
  • Ability to understand various accents and linguistic styles.
  • Demonstrated interpretation experience in health-related contexts.
  • Competence in interpreting in English and other languages.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Ability to interpret for patients and care teams.
  • Proficiency in using computers and EMR systems.
