About the role

The Global Network Infrastructure team is responsible for designing, implementing, and operating Uber Freight's production datacenter, backbone, and cloud interconnect infrastructure. Our foundational work supports all of Uber Freight's exciting business initiatives.

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Network Engineer III to support and lead and manage our network projects, provide mentorship and guidance to our engineering team, collaborate with various internal teams, and occasionally interact with external customers to resolve technical issues. This individual will be responsible for performing network management tasks, performing configuration changes, and troubleshooting network issues. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background, prior Infrastructure-as-code experience, and the capacity to work effectively in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.

Responsible for ensuring the network availability, performance and future scalability for the entire Uber Freight platform, spanning both on-premise and Cloud environments.
Embrace cross-team collaboration. You'll work closely with people across multiple Engineering and Business organizations to develop and implement network-based solutions that support our global growth.
Apply your intellectual curiosity and research new technologies; figure out their practical applications within our principles and then bring it to life in our production networks.
Have strong communication skills and a solid background in computer networking and information technology.
Have a deep understanding of network security protocols and procedures.

Basic Qualifications

5+ years of relevant network engineering experience.
Strong expertise in TCP, IPv4/6 and dynamic routing protocols such as BGP and OSPF.

Preferred Qualifications

You are passionate about leveraging software innovations to automate network management, improve network observability, and remediate problems.
You have great interpersonal skills, deep technical ability, and a portfolio of successful execution. You are open-minded to discuss various technical approaches and able to drive consensus across various stakeholders at Uber Freight.
A relentless desire to build each network better than the last. Treat networking, operational efficiency, and automation as sciences with room for artful breakthroughs.
Proficiency in one or more scripting or automation languages such as Ansible, Terraform, or Python with 2+ years experience in any is highly desirable
Previous stints at large enterprise or service-provider networks where you were responsible for design and architecture of IP networks.
Knowledge of Linux and experience troubleshooting the life of a packet from client to server and back, and all possible intermediate nodes along the way.
Knowledge about distributed systems such as software load balancers, DNS, VM/container networking (e.g. VIPs, IP tunnels, VXLANs), etc.
Experience for Software Defined Networking (SDN), Network Function Virtualization (NFV), or/and Network operating systems.
Experience with Cloud networking in either Microsoft Azure or Google Cloud Platform environments.
Relevant certifications (e.g., CCNP, CCIE) are a plus.

Key Responsibilities:

Technical Leadership and Mentorship:
Will evaluate current network environment and focus on process improvements, work with vendor support teams, and assisting hiring manager with overall network strategy
Promote a collaborative and inclusive team environment, encouraging knowledge sharing and innovation.
Provide expert assistance to other members of the IT department and act as an escalation point for IT issues.
Demonstrate an outstanding level of professionalism, including ability to exercise good judgment, discretion, tact, and diplomacy
Strong leadership skills, able to step in and take charge
Proactively investigate and evaluate new products or technologies that may be of use to the company
Implement and maintain network security protocols, ensuring compliance with industry standards and best practices.
Collaboration and Coordination:
Collaborate with diverse teams throughout Uber Freight, both internal IT and engineering teams, and teams supporting custom customer-facing applications.
Participate in cross-functional meetings, contributing technical expertise and strategic insights.
Hands-On Network Management:
Through understanding of the OSI 7-layer model and how to troubleshoot throughout the entire stack including VLANs, firewalls, load balancers, switches, routers and other network equipment.
In-depth working knowledge with enterprise-level network equipment Cisco, Meraki, Fortinet, Palo Alto, F5, and Infoblox
Have a strong understanding of anti-malware and cybersecurity concepts, Intrusion detection and prevention.
Monitor network traffic for signs of security breaches and take appropriate action to mitigate threats.
Have a strong understanding of Azure, GCP, and other cloud environments.
Perform hands-on network management tasks, including configuration changes, monitoring, and optimization.
Troubleshoot and resolve complex network issues, ensuring minimal disruption to services.
Have a strong understanding of scalability constraints and design constraints required.
Working knowledge of scripting language to monitor system performance of data center infrastructure/environment.
