The Audiology department at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta is seeking a Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.) student to complete a full-time 12-month pediatric externship. Children's Healthcare of Atlanta has been recognized in the Best Children's Hospitals ranking by U.S. News & World Report. In addition to gaining clinical experience, CHOA is partnering with the Ga LEND (Georgia Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities) Program at Georgia State University. Ga LEND aims to prepare future leaders who will enhance the lives of children and families through culturally competent and family-centered services, coordinated systems of care, and responsive social policies. Ideal externship candidates will be motivated, flexible, and have a strong interest in pediatric audiology. The extern will receive a well-rounded training from highly skilled audiologists, as well as collaborating with other teams such as Otolaryngology, Craniofacial, and inpatient services. The Ga LEND program is a two-semester interdisciplinary training experience to prepare future leaders to provide coordinated, culturally competent, and family-centered care to children and families. The program incorporates didactic and experiential learning in classroom, clinical, and community settings.

Clinical experiences during the externship will include:

  • Developmentally appropriate behavioral audiologic evaluations
  • Electrophysiologic testing during natural sleep and under anesthesia
  • Otoacoustic emissions
  • Immittance measures
  • Newborn hearing screening
  • Hearing device evaluations and orientations including hearing aids, FM systems, bone conducted sound processors
  • Cochlear implant evaluations, programming, and follow up
  • Vestibular evaluations in the pediatric population
  • Central Auditory Processing evaluations

The AuD extern will divide their clinical experience between the main hospital and several satellite locations. The extern will have a primary clinical supervisor for grading and communications with the University but will be working with multiple audiologists who have a particular interest in mentoring students. This is a full-time position, approximately 32 clinic hours/ week and there is an associated paid stipend. LEND experiences are estimated at 300 hours (approx. 10 hours per week), including a weekly seminar after clinic hours, as well as weekly courses and community-based trainings every Friday. In addition to coursework and trainings, the AuD extern will develop and present a collaborative research/ leadership project related to Ga LEND. The extern will receive a separate paid stipend as part of his/her LEND traineeship.

Candidates must have successfully completed all required coursework and clinical placements up to the application deadline and the applicant selected must maintain successful completion of coursework and clinical placements through the start of the externship.
