Overview

The Electricity Infrastructure and Buildings Division of PNNL is accelerating the transition to a decarbonized, efficient, resilient, and secure energy system through basic and applied research. We leverage a strong technical foundation in power and energy systems and in advanced data analytics to drive innovation, transform markets, and shape energy policy.

The Building Systems Group at PNNL believes that managing energy use in buildings and their connected utility systems, as well as improved technologies for enabling renewables - such as wind, water, solar, and biomass - can lead to timely solutions to our nation's energy challenges. We perform energy technology and systems research that supports energy efficiency, energy security-resiliency, energy affordability, and the integration of complex energy systems. In support of this work, the group also performs critical impact-focused studies that inform and guide this research, helping to ensure technology market readiness and acceptance and attaining goals for energy performance.

The Building Systems Group at PNNL is comprised of an interdisciplinary team of analysts, scientists, and engineers dedicated to understanding all aspects of energy efficient buildings, energy markets including efficient technologies, alternative energy resources, resource extraction, national and local impacts of policy, and the interface between human and natural systems.

Responsibilities

As an intern you'll learn about (and contribute to) DOE and DoD sponsored building science research into making homes more energy efficient and resilient. You will support DoD's renewable energy and energy resilience programs as well as DOE's building energy programs where you will be interacting with leading PNNL experts in advancing energy efficiency, energy resilience and climate goals.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Candidates must have a high school diploma /GED or higher
  • Candidates must be degree-seeking undergraduate students enrolled at an accredited college or university
  • Candidates must be taking at least 6 credit hours and have an overall cumulative GPA of 2.50

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Working on Bachelors Degree in mechanical, civil, or chemical engineering required.
  • You must be organized, efficient, detail-oriented, willing to take direction, and able to focus for long periods when not supervised.
  • Excellent writing skills desired.
  • Proficiency in Excel, Word, and Drupal, or other web page development software desired.
  • Demonstrated strong research skills in renewable energy, carbon-pollution free electricity and energy and climate resilience desired.
  • Demonstrated excellent English written and oral communication skills and the ability to work in an interdisciplinary team environment are necessary.
