Arts Technical Director and Theater Manager

Princeton Day School is seeking a dynamic and enthusiastic Arts Technical Director and Theater Manager who will provide leadership for the technical direction of the Performing Arts curricular, co-curricular and extra-curricular productions. This position will also support the wider Princeton Day School community by supervising the technical operations and resources of the performance venues, including lighting, sound and projection support for community events. The ideal candidate is an innovative and experienced problem-solver, a skillful leader with a 'can-do' attitude, and an experienced educator who is eager to invest their artistic and technical skills in the Performing Arts at Princeton Day School. This position reports to the Chair of the Fine and Performing Arts, as well as individual Program Coordinators within the department (Music, Theatre and Dance). This is a full-time 10-month exempt position that will be required to work on evenings and weekends.

For this position, the ideal candidate is expected to:

  • Supervise all performing arts productions, including theatrical design and general production management, in collaboration with the department
  • Provide scenic, lighting or audio design for performing arts productions. If an outside designer is contracted, provide support to that designer; from the contract and management of the designer's output
  • Develop appropriate technical theater curriculum for Upper, Middle and Lower School students, providing a rich experience for student learning and growth
  • Manage and support student technical crews
  • Demonstrate theatrical construction, electrical and rigging skills, stagecraft and management of production schedules, with experience in an element of design
  • Support community activities in the McAneny Theater, including meetings, special events, etc. with additional staff support
  • Coordinate scheduling of McAneny Theater
  • Maintain facility safety and resources, including maintenance of equipment, technology and storage spaces to ensure the proper functioning of the 365-seat venue
  • Maintain a 'can-do' attitude and calm disposition, even when major challenges arise
  • Demonstrate a superb work ethic and excellent organizational skills
  • Commitment to working collaboratively within the department, the school, the broader PDS community and all programs that make use of the McAneny Theater Required / Preferred Qualifications:
    • A or B.F.A in Theater or related field and/or equivalent education and experience
    • Background in stage electrics, carpentry and technical theater
    • A passion for teaching theater, stagecraft, design and collaboration
    • Experience with theater technology, including projection, sound, scenic, lighting and/or costume design
    • Computer proficiency
    • Proficient programming skills in lighting, sound and projection software
