Interventional technologists use specialized equipment to perform diagnostic angiographic procedures and complex vascular and nonvascular interventional and therapeutic procedures. This specialty requires additional knowledge of vascular systems and major vessel anatomy. The technologist must be knowledgeable in the specialized equipment employed for digital subtraction systems and interventional procedures.

The technologist administers contrast media under the supervision of the staff radiologist and confers with the radiologist to establish requirements with reference to contrast agents, vital signs, medications, and physiologic monitoring to perform procedures.


Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Schedules exams in a manner so as to optimize scanner times while maintaining flexibility for emergency cases.

This requires the ability to prioritize scheduled patients as well as the ability to accommodate the emergency patient who may need immediate emergency surgery.

Confers with radiologists to determine requirement of non-standard exams. Determines technical factors, positioning, number and thickness of scans to produce and satisfy requirements of angiography. Schedules patients for examinations. Advises radiologists or referring physicians of examination results. Notifies them of scans requiring their immediate attention.

Performs neuroangiography, including spine, head and neck studies utilizing highly sophisticated x-ray equipment such as computerized fluoroscopy, pressure injectors, parallelogram biplane imaging, and patient monitors.

The purpose of these exams is to achieve diagnostic studies of the spinal canal.
Performs peripheral and visceral angiography of the abdominal systems and extremities. These angiographic studies include renal, hepatic, mesenteric, aortic, femoral, and others.

The exams involve the use of highly sophisticated x-ray equipment such as computerized fluoroscopy, pressure injectors, biplane imaging, and patient monitors.

Such procedures may be performed in the operating room. The purpose of these exams is to achieve diagnostic or therapeutic studies of the vascular systems.
Performs myelography of the complete spine utilizing conventional x-ray units, spot films, patient immobilizers, etc., when required. The purpose of these exams is to achieve diagnostic studies of the spinal canal.

Is trained by the Chief Vascular Interventionalist or the assigned designee of the Chief Vascular Interventionalist (i.e., Staff Radiologist, Radiology Resident, and Contracted Radiologist) in proper suturing techniques.

Is also knowledgeable in minor nursing practices and sterile technique as required in an accredited radiologic technology program.

Observes and trains rotating x-ray students and technologists, medical clinic clerks, and volunteers that assist clerically or work within the department.

Performs exams utilizing surgical sterile techniques.
