Argo Group US is a national underwriter of specialty insurance in niche areas of the property-casualty market. Our full line of high-quality products and services is designed to meet the unique coverage and claim-handling needs of our Excess and Surplus Lines and Commercial Specialty segments.

Argo Group US currently has an exciting and challenging opportunity for a Head of Investment Accounting in our offices located in New York City, NY, Chicago, IL, or San Antonio, TX. This team supports the various US business unit leaders in the technical accounting for their various specialty lines.

This position will work a hybrid-schedule of 3 days in the office each week.

The primary responsibilities are:

  • Ensure accurate and timely compilation of accounting information, analysis and reporting in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Oversee and manage the Investment Accounting financial processing and reporting for all Investment Accounting.
  • Analyze, research and document complex investment transactions or new accounting standards.
  • Coordinate and maintain strong relations with Asset Managers.
  • Oversee and manage month-end, quarter-end and year-end accounting close and reporting for Investment accounting. Activities performed include the preparation of journal entries, financial analysis, account reconciliations and reporting to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Manage the daily activities of the investment accounting team.
  • Manage and produce investment reporting schedules and disclosures for the Statutory annual statements.
  • Assist with internal and external audit requests.
  • Ensure compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley internal control requirements.

The job requirements are:

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting from a four-year college or university
  • Clear knowledge and proven abilities in investment accounting and portfolio management/analysis and a minimum of 10+ years of accounting experience, preferably investment accounting or analysis in a property/casualty insurance environment
  • 1-3 years of experience managing a team of accountants/support staff
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving and verbal/written communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage, prioritize and effectively meet deadlines for multiple assignments simultaneously
  • Strong teamwork skills and display professional leadership demeanor
  • Remain flexible in a fast paced environment and possess a customer focused attitude
  • Proficient PC skills, particularly in Excel, Access and Word. Skills in accounting and investment software preferred (i.e. Clearwater).
