Position Summary:


This working supervisory position is responsible for supervising and supporting all responsibilities for the assigned Distribution Center (DC) Quality Assurance (QA) Team and to conduct detailed product safety and quality inspection of perishable food products delivered to our DC.

The goal is to assure that wholesome, fresh, high-quality perishable products meet our food safety & quality standards at receipt, storage and distribution to retail.

Partner with QA Lead, DC Operations and Brand Category leadership to implement effective strategies and programs to ensure Customer satisfaction & Brand protection by maintaining a highly effective perishable product dock inspection program.

This position supports regulatory compliance specific to Seafood HACCP, FDA's Food Safety Modernization Act, Food Defense, facility Food Safety Management Plan and facility compliance to Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) accreditation.

Principle Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Hands-on working supervisor with daily product inspection responsibilities, oversight and support for the QA Team along with deliverable timelines within the distribution center.
  • As acting SQF Practitioner, the Quality Assurance Specialist will also be responsible for the development, validation, verification, implementation and long term management of their respective distribution center's SQF system.
  • Responsible for supervising execution of the dock inspection program in the distribution center ensuring all perishable products entering the Ahold Delhaize (AD) supply chain meet company food safety standards & quality specifications. This would include, but is not limited to quality, condition, wholesomeness, package integrity, temperature, expiration or pack dates, proper counts, weights, and sizes.
  • Collaborate with Brand Category Teams to analyze and interpret product inspection results, ensure consistency with specifications, identify suppliers with poor quality history, focus inspection team resources to increase inspection levels and drive continuous improvement to overall product quality.
  • Support, train and develop QA inspectors to ensure individual performance, overall development, in-depth product inspections, sound decisions of product acceptance or rejection based upon product specifications and company standards at receipt and conducting effective surveillance inspections to monitor the condition of perishable products during storage.
  • Responsible for supporting overall regulatory compliance with USDA and FDA programs. This would include, but is not be limited to Seafood HACCP, FDA's Food Safety Modernization Act, Food Defense, and facility Food Safety Management Plan.
  • Support internal compliance with DCs operating under a food safety system recognized by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI).
  • Provide regular communication with DC leadership team providing guidance for ongoing regulatory compliance technical expertise, crisis management, cold chain management, product traceability, and required testing as needed.
  • Conduct facility food safety inspections to ensure standards are compliant with regulatory and internal requirements.
  • Monitor third-party execution of the banana ripening program to ensure stores receive suitable fruit to maximize sales. Ensure timely communication to Brand Produce Team on any aspects of program that affect quality or supply.
  • Monitor delivery of food safety training programs for supply chain associates to ensure compliance with internal and external food safety requirements.
  • Oversee all quality issues pertaining to the distribution center and retail stores.
  • Monitor all inspection activities assuring they are detailed and completed properly up to and including all daily cooler inspections.
  • Document and communicating weekly updates of team responsibilities to QA Lead.
  • Act as a liaison between category management, buyers, and distribution leadership to further ensure our desired goals and results are achieved.
  • Oversee all Food Safety aspects of the department and assure all functions are being followed thru.
  • Lead overall QA Team in accomplishing stated objectives, individual team members' continued personal and professional development and comprehension of QA department responsibilities.
  • Determine team schedules, manage daily department priorities and create a positive and encouraging work environment for the department.
  • Be a resource to our business partners and suppliers.
  • Provide outstanding customer service and team oversight.
  • Other duties as defined by the QA Lead supporting our brands.
Basic Qualifications:

  • High school diploma/equivalent
  • Self-motivated and able to function with minimal supervision, yet lead within a team environment
  • Three to five years proven leadership experience
  • Familiar with Federal, State and Local regulatory requirements
  • Must be available to work rotating schedule, including weekends.
  • Ability to become certified as Food Protection Manager, Preventative Controls Qualified Individual, Food Safety Practitioner, Food Manufacturing and Seafood HACCP
Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledgeable of USDA Standards, rules and regulations
  • Knowledgeable of Food Defense and FDA's Food Safety Modernization Act including Preventive Controls for Human Food, Sanitary Transportation of Foods and Produce Safety Rule
  • Certified Food Protection Manager (CFPM) or Certified Professional-Food Safety (CP-FS) credential
  • Seafood and Food Manufacturing HACCP Certification
  • Possess knowledge of GFSI Food Safety Certification Standards
  • Bachelor's degree in life science, public health or applicable experience in supply chain food safety operations.
Skills and Abilities:

  • Effective management skills - ability to manage team resources and to communicate with senior leadership
  • Proven leader with well-developed interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to prioritize and handle multiple projects/demands simultaneously and make decisions in the moment.
  • Good computer skills including proficiency with Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Ability to work well independently
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Team player with focus on developing self and others
  • Ability to lift product weighing up to 100 lbs. occasionally with expectations of 70-80 lbs. frequently.
