Business Manager, Center for Farm Financial Management

TITLE AND LOCATION
Business Manager, Center for Farm Financial Management. Twelve-month recurring appointment.
Located in the Department of Applied Economics, St. Paul Campus, University of Minnesota.

PROGRAM / UNIT DESCRIPTION
The Center for Farm Financial Management (CFFM) provides educational programs and software tools that are practical, timely, and applicable to real-world farm situations. Products and training focus on financial and business planning, credit analysis, risk management, and commodity marketing, and are used by lenders, educators, and farmers across the United States. A particular focus is working with historically underserved farmers and ranchers, and work with these communities continues to increase. CFFM is an entrepreneurial unit primarily funded by revenue and grants.

CFFM is located in Ruttan Hall on the St. Paul Campus of the University of Minnesota. It is a unit in the Department of Applied Economics. It is also a part of the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences and University of Minnesota Extension. For more information about CFFM and the scope of its programs, visit

This is a hybrid position. The University of Minnesota is currently offering flexible working options. Specifics will be discussed during the interview stage.

RESPONSIBILITIES
The Business Manager will work closely with CFFM leadership to help manage CFFM operations, human resources and overall budget management. This position will work closely with the CFFM director and senior management to manage and implement grants, budgets, revenue, contracts, procurements, and management functions. The person in this position will be the CFFM financial liaison with numerous
university entities.

CFFM Business and Operations Management (55%)

  • Manage the business activities of CFFM, including developing, managing, and implementing budgets, contracts, financial reports, gift management, and operation correspondence for internal sources
  • Represent CFFM with university entities regarding operations, financial and procedural administrative issues
  • Serve as CFFM interface with University accounting, procurement, and compliance
  • Develop and manage CFFM budgets and payroll distributions across programs
  • Develop and improve administrative procedures within CFFM
  • Manage CFFM merchant accounts, responsible for compliance and reporting of CFFM credit card revenue
  • Coordinate the onboarding and offboarding processes for employees
  • Help develop new position descriptions
  • Work closely with the CFFM staff responsible for CFFM's annual SOC2 security review

Grant Management (45%)

  • Member of grant proposal team that prepares CFFM grant applications with a focus on developing budgets and related documents
  • Manage accounting and business processes for CFFM grants
  • Review invoices processed against contracts and grants
  • Manage sub-awards. Liaison with sub-award institutions and review sub-award invoices
  • Manage CFFM sponsored contracts for professional services
  • Prepare reports for principal Investigators and granting agencies
  • Work with internal and external auditors of CFFM sponsored projects

QUALIFICATIONS

Essential
Bachelor's degree in relevant field plus six years of experience.

Desired

  • Experience in managing public funding sources, managing provider and vendor services.
  • Experience developing operational procedures
  • Experience in grant programs, grant submission process, and with higher education sponsored projects (auditing, accounting, or pre- or post-award project administration).
  • Experience with electronic grant submission systems such as and with grants management systems such as UMN's MN-GEMS.
  • Proven track record of developing effective relationships across disparate groups to organize and facilitate decisions and ensure implementation.
  • Demonstrated judgment and diplomacy working with diverse groups to address complex issues.
  • Demonstrated success in working as part of productive, high-energy, output oriented teams.
  • Familiarity with University of Minnesota Enterprise Financial System (EFS), policies, and procedures.

SALARY AND BENEFITS
Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications, and not based on commission. Fringe benefits include employee health, dental, and faculty life/disability insurance, social security, retirement, and opportunities for promotion and professional development. University of Minnesota employees are eligible for tuition scholarships from 75-100% for undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs.
