Normal Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm; some nights and weekends.


Job Summary: The Blackburn Student Leadership Coordinator plans, develops, and coordinates programs/events related to the Institute's student curriculum. Engages regularly with student leaders, Institute staff, campus partners, and community partners in support of the student programming. Provides student advising and mentoring, logistic and event planning, coordination of civic engagement initiatives, and website development and maintenance. Oversees the development and implementation of communication / marketing materials for students and campus stakeholders. Trains and advises student volunteers including peer leaders, mentors, and facilitators. Leads routine meetings of students including project planning, small groups, event reflections, student training, and content sessions. Provides support to all Institute's full-community events and participates in other duties as assigned.


Additional Department Summary: The Blackburn Institute is a leadership development and civic engagement program specifically focused on improving the state of Alabama. Through its work with students, alumni (Fellows), and Advisory Board members, the Institute develops a network of leaders who have a clear understanding of the state's challenges. Selected students participate in a first-year curriculum of activities and events, after which they continue their involvement for their remaining time at the Capstone. The Blackburn Institute is recognized as one of the most unique and dynamic leadership development programs in the country.

Upon graduation, participants earn recognition as Blackburn Fellows and begin their work through professional and civic involvement in their home communities and throughout the state, both individually and through the Fellows Network. Supported by an Advisory Board of established leaders committed to the state of Alabama, the Blackburn Institute promotes change through an intergenerational network that learns from the past, takes action in the present, and plans for the future.

Completes required training and promoting a safe, hospitable, and respectful workplace. Has personal accountability for financial reporting and responsibility for establishing, enforcing, and following internal processes and controls as outlined in UA policies and procedures.


Required Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree or higher.


Skills and Knowledge: Program and event planning skills. Effective communication skills. Ability to plan and include students and staff in all stages of program and event planning to problem-solving as appropriate. Demonstrated commitment to expanding multicultural knowledge, awareness, and skills as evidenced through demonstrating self-awareness; understanding and valuing others; demonstrating knowledge of social inequalities; interacting effectively with people from a variety of backgrounds and experiences.


Preferred Qualifications: Master's degree; OR bachelor's degree and two (2) years professional experience in leadership development, civic engagement, student programming, and advising student organizations.
