PCSU KOHALA WP FIELD CREW SUPERVISOR - ID#

Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Kohala Watershed Partnership (KWP), located on the Island of Hawai'i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

MONTHLY SALARY RANGE: $4,300 - $4,600/Mon.

DUTIES: Directs, supervises, and assigns work to KWP field staff in carrying out invasive weed control efforts, ungulate management/monitoring efforts, restoration efforts, fence installation/inspection/maintenance and ecological monitoring efforts. Takes the lead in recruiting, hiring, evaluating, promoting, and training of any future field staff. Directs and works with field crew to install fences, systematically map and monitor resources to control target species. Ensures staff compliance with standard operation procedures (SOPs) for fieldwork, responsible for crew safety/safe work practices and initiates appropriate disciplinary measures. Examines and evaluates problem fence sections for possible reconstruction. Determines new fence lines using compass, mapping software, or Global Positioning Systems (GPS) equipment. Drives to project sites and works in and around helicopters. Keeps daily records of all field activities and efforts, areas surveyed, native plants preparation and outplanting, plants treated/removed, herbicide usage, transects cleared, fence installed, worker hours and travel details, as well as precise location records. Collaborates with partnership members in implementation of watershed protection projects identified in the KWP Management or Action Plans. Supervises and trains field staff in weed control using mechanical and chemical techniques. Maintains field equipment and project vehicles. Purchases field supplies and equipment.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION

Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Natural Resources, Hawaiian Studies, or related field (Associate's Degree from an accredited community college or two (2) years of college-level coursework from an accredited college or university in a related discipline and two (2) years of related work experience may substitute for a Bachelor's Degree; High School Diploma or G.E.D equivalent and four (4) years of related work experience may also substitute for a Bachelor's Degree).

EXPERIENCE

Two to four (2-4) years of work experience with biological resources, conservation planning, or natural resource management in Hawai'i. Experience needs to be well-documented and acquired under the employment of an academic institution, governmental agency, private company, non-profit organization in the appropriate field. Experience must include at least one (1) year of supervisory or professional leadership experience.

KNOWLEDGE

Strong knowledge of herbicide use and weed control techniques. Strong working knowledge of ungulate management and techniques. Must have strong working knowledge and supervisory role of fence installation and expertise in vegetation and ecosystem monitoring techniques and data collection. Must possess strong knowledge of Hawaiian flora and fauna and ecological restoration processes.

ABILITIES & SKILLS

Ability to identify common and rare native Hawaiian and alien plants. Ability to read and navigate with topographic maps, state Tax Map Keys (TMKs), and aerial photographs. Ability to use GPS unit, altimeter, compass, maps, and power tools (chainsaws). Ability to use standard GIS program for data entry, analysis, and map preparation. Able to use word-processing and spreadsheet programs. Must possess a valid driver's license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver's insurance equivalent to Hawai'i's No-Fault Driver's Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission including an All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV)/Utility Terrain Vehicle (UTV). Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must possess the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain the certificate following the training provided within three (3) months from date of hire) and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must be able to complete basic helicopter safety course (A100) within twelve (12) months from date of hire. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee's initial exposure to hazardous chemicals. Must be able to complete chainsaw training within twelve (12) months from date of hire.

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS

Must be able to work at 5,000-8,000 feet elevation. Ability to hike and camp in remote areas and steep rugged terrain under inclement weather conditions, up to four (4) consecutive days. Able to backpack, lift and carry up to fifty (50) pounds unassisted.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of Hawaiian incipient alien plant and animal invasions. Familiarity with watersheds in Hawai'i. Previous experience conducting biological surveys and weed control efforts. Previous experience monitoring and mapping vegetation and stream resources on Kohala or similar environments. Expertise with database (Microsoft Access), GIS (ArcGIS Pro), and GPS (Garmin) systems. Previous fence building or construction experience in remote environments.
