Associate Director, Content Accessibility

College Board - Learning and Assessment

Remote

About the Team

The Content Accessibility team at College Board has the privilege and responsibility of ensuring that College Board assessments are accessible for individuals with disabilities. Our work is both specialized and broad: we work with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to write and review image descriptions, consult with technology teams to improve accessibility supports in authoring tools, and collaborate with accessibility and accommodations specialists across the organization to ensure test content meets policy and the needs of test-takers. We not only advocate for universal design, we live it.

About the Opportunity

As the Associate Director of Content Accessibility, it's not your work as a writer and reviewer that you're proud of. Rather, you're proud that your attention to detail and specialized knowledge of web accessibility and accessible technologies made a student's test fairer and better.

In this role, you will:

Author & reviewer (70%)
  • Write accessible test content (e.g., image descriptions), maintaining the highest standards of quality and care, for College Board assessments.
  • Review and remediate test content to conform to Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) prior to test packaging and publishing.
  • Review and remediate test-adjacent content (e.g., research studies, scoring guidelines) to meet requirements of WCAG and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) prior to publishing.
  • Conduct quality-control reviews in support of any test administration.
  • Produce error-free deliverables for external vendors, including reader scripts and braille transcription notes.
General support (30%)
  • Write and maintain image description guidelines and other documentation.
  • Write and maintain universal design policies for test-question authoring.
  • Advocate for users of accessible technology at every opportunity.
  • Research and advocate for tools, strategies, and innovations (technological and otherwise) that help improve access to test content.
  • Act as a subject-matter expert on universal design and accessible test delivery and design.
  • Document processes and seek efficiencies in all our work.

About You

You have:
  • Excellent written communication skills, with demonstrated experience writing or editing (e.g., technical writer or editor)
  • Demonstrated experience working in an accessibility- or testing accommodations-related position (e.g., accessibility specialist, inclusive designer, section 508 compliance analyst, assessment specialist)
  • Knowledge of web-content accessibility (WCAG, ARIA) and/or universal design
  • Strong organization and prioritization skills and the proven ability to move forward multiple projects in concert, both independently and as a member of the team
  • Outstanding curiosity of emerging trends and best practices in web standards and WCAG accessibility
  • Certified Professional in Accessibility Core Competencies (CPACC) certification preferred
  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Travel 1-2 times a year to our NYC or Reston, VA, offices
  • Authorization to work in the United States
About Our Process
  • Application review will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled
  • While the hiring process may vary, it generally includes: resume and application submission, recruiter phone screen, hiring manager interview, performance exercise and/or panel interview, and reference checks. This is an approximately 8-week process
About Our Benefits and Compensation

College Board offers a competitive benefits and compensation program that attracts top talent looking to make a difference in education. As a self-sustaining non-profit, we believe in compensating employees equitably in relation to each other, their qualifications, their impact, and the relevant market.

The hiring range for a new employee in this position is $64,000 to $105,000. College Board differentiates salaries by location so where you live will narrow the portion of this range in which you can expect a salary.

Your salary will be carefully determined based on your location, relevant experience, the external labor market, and the pay of College Board employees in similar roles. College Board strives to provide our best offer up front based on this criteria.

Your salary is only one part of all that College Board offers, including but not limited to:
  • A comprehensive package designed to support the well-being of employees and their families and promote education. Our robust benefits package includes health, dental, and vision insurance, generous paid time off, paid parental leave, fertility benefits, pet insurance, tuition assistance, retirement benefits, and more
  • Recognition of exceptional performance through annual bonuses, salary growth over time through market increases, and opportunities for merit raises and promotions based on increased scope of responsibility
  • A job that matters, a team that cares, and a place to learn, innovate and thrive
