Responsibilities:

  • Ensures activities of the Clinical Laboratory and Anatomic Pathology operate in a manner consistent with institutional mission, operational goals, objectives and, policies, professional standards and governmental and professional regulations, in compliance with accrediting agency criteria.
  • Responsible for ensuring the hospital's mission is adhered to in the laboratory and pathology departments, and ensures consistent readiness for unannounced onsite regulatory inspections.
  • Responsible for continually improving quality, patient and physician satisfaction, and staff competence; implementingand sustaining improvement of all laboratory operations; effectively and efficiently managing human, material, capital and financial resources.
  • Responsible for expanding service utilization levels and increasing staff productivity; assessing current services, evaluating alternative approaches in implementing programs that revise, expand or modify the scope of services provided by the Department of Laboratory and Pathology.
  • Responsible for establishing and maintaining effective, cooperative working relationships with medical, nursing, administrative and professional Staff.
  • Coordinates and oversees the efficient and effective operation of the Laboratory (Laboratory Support Services, Automated, Blood Bank, Microbiology, and Anatomic Pathology); supervise and evaluate personnel and perform technical and administrative duties as they apply to this department;
  • Manages the technical environment of care; oversees staff education, competency assessment, and adherence to the quality care model;
  • Accountable for review of departmental expenditures and justification of variances; responsible for departmental quality assurance, and strict adherence to regulatory and accreditation standards.
  • Further responsibility includes the planning, organizing and monitoring the testing activities for all Clinical Laboratory Departments, and the hospital-wide point-of-care testing program, in order to ensure the delivery of fast, accurate, and meaningful test results in an efficient and cost-effective manner.
  • The individual interacts with the Director of Laboratory Administrative Services, Chairman of the Department of Pathology, Director of QI/Risk Management, and other managers and physicians as necessary to ensure that all regulatory requirements are met according to established protocol for a hospital performing high complexity procedures as defined by the standards of the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act of 1988.
  • Supports the Mission of Trinity Health and Holy Cross Health.

What you will need:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Clinical Laboratory Technology (Medical Technology), biological, chemical or related science; and satisfactory completion of a clinical laboratory educational rotation;

-or-

  • A baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college/university including courses in biological science, chemistry and mathematics –and- successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Medical Technologist program.

-or-

  • A baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college/university, including 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) of biological science (with one semester in microbiology), 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) of chemistry, one semester (one quarter) of mathematics, -and- one year of full time acceptable clinical laboratory experience in Blood Banking, Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, Immunology and/or Clinical Microscopy within the last ten years. Clinical rotations or professional experience must be under the supervision of a pathologist (certified by the American Board of Pathology) or an appropriately board certified medical scientist and a certified medical technologist.

–and/or-

  • Current ASCP, AMT, or NCA certification as a Medical Technologist. Can consider previously certified Medical Technologists, who met the credentialing requirements by the Department of Health Education and Welfare (HEW certified MT).
  • Five years' experience in a Chemistry, Hematology, Coagulation, Urinalysis and Reference Laboratory testing setting with demonstrated competence in performing the full range of routine and special procedures;
  • Strong knowledge of laboratory methodologies, interpretation of results, quality assurance, and CMS regulations required;
  • Must demonstrate knowledge, understanding and application of CAP, JCAHO, state and federal regulations;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of laboratory statistical analysis and quality control principles. Proven experience in quality control, quality improvement and assurance.
  • Supervisory experience (1 year) preferred;
  • Demonstrate effective management, interpersonal, and organization skills.
  • Excellent verbal, and written skills;
  • Demonstrated competence in organizing workflow, troubleshooting, and problem resolution in dealing with staff and physicians;
  • Ability to work in harmony with other personnel within the department and throughout the organization.
