About Fistula Foundation
Fistula Foundation combines the dynamism of a lean startup with the stability of a mature organization. We are demonstrating to the world that a new approach to women’s health can change the trajectory of women’s lives and have a profound impact on local communities. An estimated one million women in Africa and Asia suffer from obstetric fistula, a debilitating childbirth injury that leaves a woman incontinent and, as a result, too often abandoned by her family and shunned by her community. Surgery is the only cure, which we deliver through partners in 30 countries across Africa and Asia. Since 2009, we have provided more than 90,000 free, life-transforming surgeries to women in need. Each year since 2006, we’ve received the highest rating from every nonprofit sector watchdog group. Charity Watch lists us as one of only 34 Top Rated International Organizations, and GuideStar has awarded us Platinum Participant status—the highest designation available to charities. We have also earned the recognition of leaders such as Pulitzer Prize winner Nicholas Kristof, Grammy winner Paul Simon, and internationally renowned ethicist Peter Singer.
The Opportunity
Over many years, Fistula Foundation has increased revenue at a significantly higher rate than the nonprofit sector average, and now we are poised to grow further and faster by cultivating new supporters. We seek an outstanding fundraising leader to deepen relationships on behalf of the Foundation with new and existing donors to fuel our ambitious goals, including geographic and programmatic expansion initiatives. Reporting to the VP of Philanthropy, the Director of Philanthropy approaches their work with integrity and transparency, serving as an integral part of our talented, collaborative team. Our ideal candidate is an ambitious self-starter with a demonstrated track record of cultivating and soliciting gifts of $10k+ including proactive prospecting of new donors.
Key Responsibilities
- Cultivate existing major donors and major donor prospects with capacity to give $10k+ (domestically and internationally) to fuel our program expansion
- Manage a portfolio of approximately 80-100 major donors and prospects, serving as the primary relationship manager to cultivate, solicit, and steward donors
- Serve as the primary relationship manager for this portfolio and build long-term relationships with donors, maintaining active contact through in-person meetings, cultivation events, and personalized email and written communications
- Source and cultivate new major donor prospects to increase the fundraising pipeline, with a focus on the Bay Area/Silicon Valley
- Develop unique cultivation and solicitation strategies for donors and prospects and craft winning, customized proposals tailored to the donors’ interests
- Collaborate with program staff to incorporate partner success stories into fundraising solicitations and donor communication materials
- Create customized annual and long-term strategies for portfolio donors, with specific goals
- Conceptualize and execute creative cultivation and stewardship events
- Regularly track and report on development metrics to leadership team, including trends, wins, and challenges
- Design thoughtful stewardship processes that respond to the unique needs of individual donors and ensure donors feel informed, celebrated, and recognized
- Plan and execute 20-25% fundraising travel, including a minimum of one regional fundraising trip per month, as well as periodic international donor trips
- Develop collaborative relationships with potential partner organizations
Ideal Candidate Qualifications
Please don't hesitate to apply even if you don't meet all ideal qualifications - we value diverse perspectives and are committed to fostering growth within our team.
- Passion for maternal health and strong interest in global health issues and solutions
- 10+ years professional experience with at least 3 years of major gifts experience
- Track record of cultivating and closing gifts at $10k and above
- Outstanding written and verbal communication skills including direct experience drafting compelling proposals to speak to varied audiences
- Knowledge and experience effectively prospecting for new major donor audiences
- High degree of internal motivation and comfort working independently as well as in teams
- Comfort traveling 20-25% as needed
- Cultural humility and commitment to continuous learning and collaboration across differences
Benefits and Culture
Our team prioritizes initiative, productivity, and teamwork. We celebrate the successes of our team and our partners. We value creativity and passion for our mission, while encouraging our teammates to live healthy lives. We believe that our work is enhanced by a diversity of thought and perspectives.
We are offering a salary range of $130-140k based on qualifications, with the potential for performance-based bonuses and increases. Fistula Foundation also offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes:
- Health insurance (Foundation covers 100% of premium with no deductible)
- 403b retirement plan (with a generous employer match)
- A dog-friendly office
- 13 paid holidays and 23 days vacation beginning in the first year of employment
