Advocacy Intern

The Advocacy Intern will support the Advocacy program at the Melanoma Research Foundation (MRF) and its goal of improving the lives of melanoma patients and their caregivers through effective mobilization of advocates and engagement with decision-makers.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


Program Development

• Assist with the preparation of the annual Advocacy Days event with the Events Logistics Coordinator and work with the Advocacy Coordinator to secure speakers for program, relay logistics, design Congressional Leave Behinds, prepare materials, and train advocates.

• Assist Advocacy team in developing calls to action and drafting policy briefs.

• Work with the Communications Team to ensure that all recorded meetings, webinars, and other events are edited and posted to the MRF website within a timely manner.

• Work with the Advocacy Coordinator to data mine and update mobilization platform.

• Assist Advocacy team with development of rural health webinar series.

• Assist with ensuring advocacy inventory remains up-to-date and mailed out to relevant programmatic events

• Develop prevention-related webinar by the end of internship


Program Support:

• Research federal and state legislative and regulatory issues and track progress of calls to action

• Assist in meeting and presentation prep for the Advocacy department

• Attend in-person educational events

• Provide general administrative support to the Advocacy Team as needed


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• 1-2 years of policy experience, preferably in cancer, public health or healthcare related industries; internship experiences acceptable

• Team-player with a positive attitude who is able to effectively work with multiple constituents

• Excellent critical thinking, organizational, time management, prioritization and problem-solving skills

• Strategic and collaborative mindset with the ability to execute and drive results effectively

• Project confidence, strategic thinking and persuasive capabilities when sharing ideas and concepts with clients and team members

• Ability to work with diverse population and be sensitive to cultural differences

• Excellent written and oral communication skills

• Proficient using Microsoft Office applications

• Experience using Survey Monkey (or similar survey platform) as well as virtual meeting platforms


EDUCATION:

• Undergraduate or graduate student pursuing a degree in Political Science, Public Health, or a related field required


OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Candidate must be local to the DMV Metropolitan Area as the internship is hybrid and based in Washington, DC.


ADA PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

• The position requires being seated for several hours a day

• The employee must frequently speak and hear as well as utilize the telephone, computer keyboard and monitor, pen and paper
