The main function of a CARB OBD Certification Testing Engineer is to work and validate the OBD related powertrain system within vehicles. They are responsible to establish a process for official OBD Certification testing and software validation with the aim to execute this process long term. Furthermore, they are responsible to conduct other OBD and powertrain related testing and validation activities.


Job Responsibilities:

- Execute process for large Certification testing projects involving emissions and OBD

- Perform the validation of released or soon to be released software for US market light-duty gasoline, diesel and hybrid vehicles.

- Plan and conduct testing of gasoline or diesel powertrains in the areas of combustion, emissions control/OBD

- Perform root cause analysis of issues and discuss countermeasures in a team setting.

- Plan and support emissions or OBD testing activities and coordinate overall emission or OBD validation projects.

- Perform analysis of conducted testing in respective areas and create reports for internal and external stakeholder (including CARB)

- Perform analysis of certification related software changes and create reports for internal and external stakeholders.

- Present results and findings to upper management and other important stakeholders


Requirements:

- Detail-oriented mindset and strong project coordination skills required.

- Experience with light-duty gasoline and diesel engine control units, especially Bosch control units

- Comprehensive knowledge and experience of CARB OBD2 regulations

- Experience in OBD2 monitor development (i.e. design or calibration) and testing

- Strong understanding of light-duty gasoline and diesel emissions regulations

-Proficient with data acquisition and development tools/languages such as INCA, MATLAB and/or Python.

-Ability to author clear and concise technical reports for a wide, global audience

-Bachelor’s degree or 3-5 years’ of related experience


Minimum skills required:

• Automotive Knowledge: Knowledge of current automobile technology, vehicle electrical and onboard diagnostics and communication architectures, assembly structure, modules and parts. General knowledge of vehicle functions.

• Project Management Skills: Ability to control projects from conceptualization to implementation. Clear understanding of controlling key performance indicators and effective reporting. Strong skills in financial controlling of projects.

• Interpersonal and Team skills: Experience in intercultural environment, with German language skills favored. Experience to work in a complex organization structure.

• Analytic or systems engineering Knowledgeerability to identify issues, analyze and evaluate problems, develop solutions and scenarios, evaluate alternative solutions based on established criteria and decision making.

• Organization and leadership skills: Ability to organize workflows within the TechCenter and with all external partners, especially with the durability service suppliers.

• Analytic or systems engineering knowledge: Experience, or willingness to learn, the troubleshooting of data-logger equipment and database systems in order to identify logger issues and to analyze and determine failure root causes and find solutions.


•Automotive Knowledge: Detailed knowledge of automobile technology, vehicle architecture, assembly structure, modules and parts. Comprehensive knowledge of vehicle functions.

•Diagnostic Knowledge: Knowledge of common diagnostic tools (tele diagnosis, INCA, Videamo/Ecoute, Diagmera, Monaco) and ability to interpret diagnostic data. Experience with CAN bus systems and ECU design.

•Project Management Skills: Ability to control projects from conceptualization to implementation. Clear understanding of controlling key performance indicators and effective reporting. Strong skills in financial controlling of projects.

Top Must Have's:

1. Excellent communication in general – oral, meetings, emails, phone calls

2. General automotive knowledge. Must understand or have automotive knowledge.

3. Must be interested in tasks of this position in particular – Heavy Engineering program management and comfortable with hands-on work.


Minimum of 4-year degree in mechanical eng or technical degree

Best case 3-7 years of exp – less than would be considered if a candidate has specific exp at MB or another automotive company in this position


-Someone who has exp with the validation of vehicle development would be helpful.
