Long Beach, California, United States Relativity Full time

Company Overview:

At Relativity Space, we are driven by two ambitious objectives: to establish a premier commercial launch enterprise with Terran R and to lead the charge in innovation within additive manufacturing.

Both initiatives contribute to our overarching vision of creating a sustainable industrial base on Mars, facilitating the expansion of interplanetary life and enhancing the human experience.

This journey commences on Earth, where we design, construct, and launch rockets to deliver payloads into orbit.

Terran R, our medium-to-heavy lift reusable rocket, addresses the increasing demand for launch capabilities, thanks to our iterative approach that accelerates design, testing, and development while keeping costs low.

Our pioneering research and development in 3D printing is pushing the limits of large-scale additive manufacturing.

Your experience with us transcends a mere job – it’s a chance to influence the future of aerospace technology, additive manufacturing, and the human experience alongside a community of dedicated, innovative individuals.

Join us on this remarkable journey as we collaborate to turn our vision into reality.

About the Team:
The Propulsion Engineering team at Relativity Space is tasked with developing engines that will power the Terran R launch vehicle.

We oversee the design from initial concept through successful launch and reuse, collaborating with partner teams to manufacture, test, and integrate these engines.

We are achieving rapid development of these engines, progressing from the initial sizing of the Aeon R engine to successful integrated hot fire tests.

In the coming year, we will conduct tests on multiple iterations of the Aeon R booster engine, culminating in flight qualification and the testing of our first iteration of the Aeon R Vac second stage engine.

As a member of this team, you will contribute to the development, testing, and iteration of our Aeon-R engine systems throughout their lifecycle from concept to launch and reuse.

About the Role:

This position may encompass various areas of our team based on your expertise and the current needs of the team.

In the testing aspect of your role, you will act as a Responsible Engineer for a range of propulsion test articles, including combustion devices, valves, heat exchangers, and other Aeon engine subsystems.

Collaborating closely with product owners, you will create test plans and execute test campaigns with our Stennis team.

You will be responsible for the exploratory operation of both new and existing test article designs, thoroughly evaluating test hardware behavior to support ongoing engine development and certification.

On the systems side, you may assist with engine subsystem troubleshooting, partner team product investigations, and more.

As our vehicle development program advances, you may have the chance to participate in stage test and flight campaigns.

You will also take ownership of projects you initiate to enhance our collective efficiency.

To excel in this role, you should be adept at leading collaborative projects to completion with minimal supervision.

You should also be a proactive individual who continuously seeks to improve and expand your knowledge about the systems that interact with yours.

With these high expectations comes the opportunity to significantly impact a rapidly growing startup and to achieve swift professional growth in an environment that fosters development and innovation.

This role requires an average of 25% travel to our test and launch sites.

This position may occasionally necessitate weekend work for critical milestones.

About You:
Experience applying engineering principles in fluid mechanics and thermodynamics

Experience in test operations environments

Experience with ownership, problem-solving skills, professional collaboration, and providing mentorship

Experience meeting ambitious timelines, particularly when unconventional solutions are required

Bachelor's degree in a science, engineering, technology, or mathematics field

5+ years of relevant experience, ideally in a complex engineering system development and/or testing environment

Experience with at least one of the following:
Combustion Devices, Valves, Heat Exchangers, or Instrumentation

Relativity Space offers competitive salary and equity, a generous vacation policy, an annual learning and development stipend, and more.

We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our company.
