Position Description: Executive Vice President, Public Affairs and Communications


Ohio River South (ORS) is a full-service advisory firm serving government, business, and nonprofit leaders who want to drive results and make an impact in the South. Our firm provides strategy and implementation across government relations, public affairs, research, strategic partnerships, and communications. We are seeking to hire a full-time Executive Vice President, Public Affairs and Communications based in Atlanta, Georgia. The incumbent will work closely with our C-Suite to strengthen, expand, and lead the firm’s public affairs and communications service lines, and deliver responsive, high-quality service to our clients. We will look to this position to grow our business specifically in the areas of public affairs, communications, media relations, reputation management, and public relations. As a member of our senior leadership team, this position will expand our ability to craft solutions, broker partnerships, bridge gaps, and open doors for the businesses, advocacy organizations, government agencies and nonprofits that call on us for support. 


Role & Responsibilities:


Leadership and Business Development

  • Serve as client lead on a portfolio of public affairs and communications engagements, across a range of business and policy issues.
  • Lead and develop a team focused on public affairs and communications services, and provide overall leadership to a group of multi-functional professionals
  • Devise successful marketing strategies to bolster the firm’s reputation for delivering high- quality public affairs and communications services and deliver measurable growth in our client base.
  • Devise, collaborate and provide leadership to develop new offerings and strategic approaches to Ohio River South public affairs and communications service lines
  • Seek out, define and propose opportunities to expand our services to new and existing clients to include public affairs strategies and objectives
  • Establish new partnerships and recruit new Ohio River South allies in order to expand our opportunities and standing with respect to public affairs and communications services across the southeastern United States
  • Be an active, thoughtful member of the firm’s senior leadership team, contributing ideas, offering proactive recommendations, and guiding the growth of the firm.
  • Serve as chief marketing officer for ORS - promoting the firm, building the brand, and elevating our reputation.


Client Services 

  • Anticipate client challenges and opportunities before they happen and provide solutions on how to address them.
  • Help the firm deepen and expand relationships with stakeholders and decision makers that could lead to expanded opportunities for the firm.
  • Develop, implement and track solutions for clients based on their stated needs, and identify additional opportunities to support client interests (based on their values).
  • Manage client teams and deploy the resources of the firm in an effective and efficient manner in pursuit of client goals and new opportunities.
  • Establish and maintain an active role in relevant partner organizations and associations that improve our ability to serve client goals and strengthen our practice 
  • Establish, maintain and leverage a broad array of relationships across relevant issue areas and sectors in the interest of current and future clients 
  • Execute and communicate clear and insightful analyses of decisions, policies and opportunities in support of client pursuits and public benefit.
  • Represent the firm in relevant, impactful meetings and public events.


Qualifications: 

The ideal candidate is based in either the Atlanta or Washington, DC metro areas and is an established, charismatic mid-career professional with high-quality experience, a strong network, and a reputation for achievement in public affairs and communications.


8-10 years with extensive involvement in any of the following areas: 

  • Communications
  • Public/media relations
  • Journalism
  • Communications or public affairs agency
  • Public affairs role in the public or private sector, or public-facing nonprofit, think tank, or trade association

Experience building or leading a public affairs and communications practice.

Demonstrated success in developing and winning new business proposals.

Warm relationships with local, regional and national news outlets.

Expert-level written and oral communications.

Demonstrated ability to grasp and effectively communicate complex issues.

Experience leading a team - managing day-to-day performance, setting priorities and goals, providing feedback and guiding professional development.

Bachelor's degree in a relevant field; master's degree preferred.

Experience in the metro Atlanta area and/or other cities in the Southeast will significantly strengthen the candidate's application.
