$225 flat rate for overnights, lights out to lights on


Job Description

The Visitor Services Host will ensure guests have a great experience at the Lancaster Science Factory. The primary role will be hosting birthday parties, leading hands-on science experiments for parties, and staffing our overnight program.


Birthday Parties

The Visitor Services host will ensure that the birthday room is prepared for all parties to which they are assigned. This includes cleaning the room, putting out table covers, and, in some instances, setting out food and drinks.

For birthday parties that include a hands-on science activity, the birthday host will also prepare all necessary supplies and lead the activity. (These may include, but are not limited to, making slime, elephant toothpaste, and watercolor salt painting.)


Overnight Program

The Visitor Services host will staff overnight programs (7pm – 8am). These programs are currently scheduled 4 times per year on Saturdays in November, December, January, and February. Duties include checking in registered guests, setting up an evening snack, addressing guest questions and concerns as they arise, staying overnight, setting up breakfast in the morning, and cleaning up before leaving.


Visitor Services

Other duties will include keeping the exhibit floor clean and in good order before the doors open and throughout the day, interacting with guests over the phone and in person with a positive attitude, accepting payment for admissions and memberships, turning on and shutting down exhibits, ringing up sales from our retail store, assisting with tasks related to groups and field trips, and other light cleaning and organizational tasks.


The Science Factory’s regular operating hours are as follows:

September – May

  • Tuesday – Saturday, 10 am – 5 pm
  • Sunday 12 pm – 5 pm

June – August

  • Monday-Saturday 10 am – 5 pm
  • Sunday 12 pm – 5 pm


This position will work some weekdays, weekends, and overnights. Additional hours may be available in the evenings for special events. The schedule is generally made one month in advance.


Qualities and Qualifications

A well-qualified candidate would be able to work independently and serve as a good representative of the Science Factory to the public. This is a leadership position within our Visitor Services team. All Visitor Service team members should have exceptional customer service skills and have prior experience with or a willingness to learn the following:

  • Facilitating hands-on activities for children (in a classroom or informal setting).
  • Visitor Service in a Museum, Attraction, or Tourism settings
  • Clear communicator. Able to enforce rules and safety guidelines.
  • Experience in a dynamic environment with children and families.
  • Point-of-sale cash register systems


Visitor Services staff members are also expected to learn about the various programs offered by The Lancaster Science Factory. Training will be provided.

This position must hold Pennsylvania criminal and child abuse clearances. Employer assistance with these clearances is available.
