Kansas City, United States University of Kansas Medical Center Full time

Role Description

This is a full-time role for a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Cortical Plasticity Laboratory at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas on multiple National Institutes of Health-funded projects. In general, our laboratory is interested in the role of spared brain regions on functional motor recovery after acquired brain injury (such as stroke and traumatic brain injury) in rodent and non-human primate models. We utilize an integrated approach in which we investigate behavioral, neurophysiological, and anatomical outcomes during spontaneous recovery and in response to various interventional techniques following brain injury. Our current projects focus on assessing changes in connectivity within and between spared brain regions using chronically implanted microelectrode arrays though population-level analysis of single-unit neural activity as it relates to skilled reaching tasks and in the short-latency responses to microstimulation across multiple motor and somatosensory regions. The successful candidate(s) will have a Ph.D. in neuroscience, bioengineering, physiology, or similar fields. This position offers an exciting opportunity to study the mechanisms of neuroplasticity and rehabilitation utilizing cutting edge neurophysiological techniques and can be renewable for up to 5 years. The candidate will be tasked with supporting existing funded experiments while developing independent studies consistent with personal and laboratory goals broadly within the field of neurorehabilitation. The candidate will have the opportunity to develop ties within the KU Medical Center, KU-Lawrence, and with our national and international collaborators.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience doing in vivo recordings from microelectrode arrays (single-unit, LFP).
  • Spike sorting/signal processing of multi-channel data, especially task-related data.
  • Experience with animal models of neurological conditions.
  • Proficiency in data management of multimodal data.
  • Experience with large dimensional data analysis/dimensionality reduction.
  • Experience with hardware/software development in service of experiments.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Experience with grant writing and securing funding is a plus.
  • Ph.D. in a relevant field.
