DEFINITION

Under direct supervision of the Supervisor of Maintenance/Operations or Designee, performs skilled maintenance, repair and construction tasks pertaining to all district facilities.

Operates a variety of groundskeeping equipment and performs complex groundskeeping and gardening activities, assists other maintenance/grounds personnel in maintenance and groundskeeping functions; and other related work as required.



ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Performs skilled tasks of a general nature in maintenance, repair, and construction work in the basic maintenance trades, including carpentry, painting, electrical, plumbing, heating, air conditioning, locksmithing, carpet and tile installation, and metalsmithing.
  • Performs a variety of functions in the construction, installation, and maintenance of roofs, furniture, fences, playground equipment, cabinets, shelving, chalkboards, bulletin boards, and a variety of other structures and fixtures.
  • Assists in or performs the installation, repair, and maintenance of gas and water lines.
  • Installs and replaces door and window glass.
  • Makes minor electrical installations and repairs.
  • May adjust, repair, and maintain electrical equipment and a variety of apparatus and devices.
  • Repairs heating, ventilation, and cooling equipment.
  • May replace or repair carpeting and floor tile.
  • Assists in the installation, repair, and maintenance of door locks and closures.
  • Prepares surfaces, mix paints and finish a variety of equipment, furniture, school, and physical structures.
  • Welds metal parts together using gas and electric welding processes, and fabricates metal and sheetmetal structural fixtures.
  • Operates equipment, such as trucks, tractors, and other related motorized equipment.
  • Repairs and installs plumbing and its related system.
  • Installs and maintains swamp coolers.
  • Is responsible for trouble shooting and making repairs to such equipment as heaters, light fixtures, electrical circuits, kitchen equipment, refrigeration equipment, and shop equipment.
  • Performs custodial duties as directed.
  • Responds to emergency calls.
  • Maintains accurate work records.
  • Operates a variety of power grounds equipment, including large gang mowers, tractors, back hoe equipment and sweepers.
  • May drive a truck with a trailer attachment in transporting heavy duty grounds maintenance equipment from work site to work site.
  • Services grounds maintenance equipment and makes minor adjustments and repairs, and performs a variety of preventative maintenance functions.
  • Fills, levels, smoothes, and prepares areas for sidewalks, approaches, slabs, and in preparing landscaped areas for the planting of lawns and a variety of plants, shrubs, and trees.

Knowledge of:

  • Basic methods, techniques, materials, tools, and equipment used in maintenance, repair, and construction functions;
  • Rules, regulations, and operational procedures pertaining to the repair, maintenance, and construction of school buildings, machines, and equipment;
  • Safe working methods and procedures;
  • Operation, use, and maintenance of heavy duty grounds maintenance equipment;
  • Methods, procedures, materials, and tools commonly utilized in grounds maintenance and gardening work.

Ability to:

  • Skillfully use a variety of tools and equipment utilized in one or more of the basic maintenance trades;
  • Perform heavy manual work functions pertaining to maintenance, groundskeeping, equipment operation and gardening work;
  • Work from blueprints, shop drawings, and sketches;
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a wide variety of personalities;
  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions;
  • Skillfully and safely operate and maintain large grounds equipment and use a variety of grounds maintenance and gardening tools.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical requirements indicated below are examples of the physical aspects that this position classification must perform in carrying out essential job functions.


  • Persons performing service in this position classification will exert 50 to 75 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects and will occasionally lift up to 90 lbs. This type of work may involve ascending and descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, and ramps, and will involve walking or standing for extended periods.
  • Perceiving the nature of sound, near and far vision, depth perception, providing oral information, the manual dexterity to operate equipment and use hand tools, and handle and work with various materials and objects are important aspects of this job.
  • Exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy conditions caused by weather may occasionally be experienced.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and skill is qualifying.

A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and skill would be:

Experience:

  • Experience as a three (3) years skilled worker in one or more of the basic maintenance trades.
  • Experience in the operation of grounds equipment and power mowers used in performing groundskeeping work.

Education:

  • Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade, supplemented by specific training in one or more of the maintenance trades.

LICENSE REQUIREMENT
Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's License.
