Relay Resident

Houston, Texas, United States KIPP Foundation Full time
Full-time

  • Start Date: Next year opening
  • Department: Teaching Fellow

Company Description:

KIPP Texas Public Schools is a network of 59 public charter, open-enrollment, pre-k-12 schools educating nearly 34,000 students across Austin, Dallas-Ft.

Worth, Houston, and San Antonio.

Together with families and communities, our mission is to create joyful, academically excellent schools that prepare students with the skills and confidence to pursue the paths they choose —college, career, and beyond—so they can lead fulfilling lives and build a more just world.

Founded in Houston in 1994, and operating as KIPP Texas since 2018, our commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and antiracism in our classrooms, in our offices, and in the communities we serve is unwavering.

We are looking to hire a diverse team of dynamic, collaborative, and dedicated individuals with an unyielding belief that every child will succeed.

Join our Team and Family and
champion equity, chase excellence, persist with purpose, bring joy, and help us
rise together.

KIPP Texas is part of the national KIPP network of 255 college-preparatory public charter schools in 20 states and the District of Columbia.

Nationwide, KIPP students complete four-year college at a rate of 36 percent, comparable to the national average for all students and approximately three times higher than the average of students from low-income communities.

The KIPP Texas Relay Residency is a prestigious, rigorous, paid two-year program designed for new teachers to gain first hand teaching experience and to obtain their Master of Arts in Teaching degree and Texas Teaching Certification in partnership with Relay Graduate School of Education.

Please note, any offers for the Relay Resident role are contingent on applicant's acceptance and active enrollment into Relay GSE.

Please read this job description carefully and reach out to D'Essence Grant, Manager of Pipeline Programs at KIPP Texas, for additional information.

In this two-year program, starting in the summer of 2024, residents will spend their first year of the Residency learning from graduate school professors and pre-selected mentor teachers at KIPP Texas.

As the year continues, residents gradually increase their teaching responsibilities before moving into a lead teaching role in the second year of the program.

Residents must pass their final assessment to be considered for a lead-teacher position the following year.

During both years of the residency, residents receive professional development and coaching from the Relay Graduate School of Education and KIPP Texas.

At the successful conclusion of the two-year residency, residents will have earned their Master of Arts in Teaching and their Texas Teaching Certification.

Residents receive a salary and full benefits both years, in addition to tuition contributions during the first year of the program.

Residents are placed in all KIPP Texas schools in grades Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade in core content area classrooms (i.e. English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and Elementary self-contained classrooms. We are unable to place Residents in Fine Arts, Physical Education, or other electives classes).

Residents are paid $40,000 in their first year of the program and are then paid a starting teacher's salary (based on the regional salary scale) in their second year when they become a lead teacher.

Please note, there are out-of-pocket costs for this program.

Residents will pay out-of-pocket for tuition and fees for the two-year certification and Master's program directly to Relay's Graduate School of Education, although most are able to supplement out-of-pocket costs with grants and/or financial aid.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

The Relay Resident will:

1. Participate in Professional Development & Relay Coursework

  • Attend a summer term before the first year and between the first and second year of the program in addition to four weeknight classes a month
  • Complete 1020 hours of Relay online coursework monthly
  • Participate in threehour weekly Deliberate Practice session with other Residents (during the work day)
  • Attend all school and regional level professional development (PD) sessions.
  • Successfully complete Relay assessments and gateways

2. Gradually increase teaching responsibilities throughout the first year

  • In partnership with a preselected mentor teacher, develop and deliver academically rigorous lessons; create rubrics and assessments
  • Begin teaching the first few minutes of the mentor teacher's class in September, and gradually increase teaching responsibilities throughout the year until the Resident is teaching the full class period every day.
