Security Officer – Campus Police Department - Georgetown University Capitol Campus

Job Overview

The Security Officer plays a crucial role in maintaining the security and safety of assigned buildings or areas by overseeing access control systems, circulation, safety systems, and emergency procedures. Responsibilities include:

  • Adhering to all special and general orders relevant to the job
  • Conducting regular security and safety inspections
  • Reporting any deficiencies to the supervisor
  • Monitoring traffic flow
  • Identifying and responding to unusual incidents promptly
  • Utilizing available communication channels for reporting
  • Performing assigned tasks as needed

Work Interactions

Reporting to the Police Sergeant, the Security Officer works both independently and collaboratively with other security personnel, patrol officers, communications officers, and student guards. Regular interactions involve students, faculty, staff, visitors, and the local community, being a prominent representative of the Georgetown Law's Campus Police Department.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum 1 year of general work experience; 1 year in security, law enforcement, or military roles preferred

Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certification

  • Minimum 18 years old
  • Eligibility for a Security Officer License in the District of Columbia
  • Completion of written and report writing tests, drug test, physical exam, and psychological assessments
  • Proficiency in basic computer skills and word processing
  • Demonstrated tact, patience, and professionalism in interactions
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Understanding of police powers in a University setting

Essential The Security Officer is considered essential per the University's personnel policy, being on call as needed, and willing to work varying hours—including day shifts, evening shifts, and overnight shifts—to meet departmental requirements.
