WHAT DOES THE ACCOUNT DIRECTOR, DIRECT MAIL DO?
The Account Director, Direct Mail is accountable for establishing and sustaining strong client relationships, overseeing direct mail marketing campaigns, and guaranteeing the effective implementation of direct mail strategies that drive customer engagement, acquisition, and retention.
You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to ensure that direct mail campaigns are aligned with overarching marketing and business objectives. This role requires a combination of marketing expertise, project management acumen, and client communication abilities. This is a St. Louis-based position. The job is primarily remote, with approximately 90% of your time spent working from home. You will be required to attend certain meetings at our client offices in St. Louis.
A typical week may look like this:
- Monday - Imagine you kickstart the week by taking the lead in a team meeting, offering valuable support and guidance to your direct mail specialists. Together, you delve into planning upcoming campaigns and refining your marketing strategies for maximum impact.
- Tuesday - Building on the productive discussions from Monday's meeting, you may continue to collaborate with your team to set clear campaign objectives, establish budgets, create timelines, and define key performance indicators (KPIs). You will pinpoint specific customer segments for personalized direct mail content, ultimately enhancing campaign effectiveness and return on investment (ROI).
- Wednesday - Picture yourself on the go, visiting external vendors such as printing companies, mailing houses, or data providers. During these visits, you will actively engage in negotiations, manage vendor contracts, and oversee budgetary aspects, with a primary focus on ensuring top-quality production and seamless delivery of direct mail campaigns.
- Thursday - As you approach Thursday, you may dedicate the day to budget management. Imagine diving into a thorough review of campaign expenses, conducting a meticulous ROI assessment, and performing a financial analysis of the overall health of the account.
- Friday - The week may wrap up with a sharp focus on performance analysis. Picture yourself diligently monitoring campaign metrics, utilizing advanced analytics tools to gain insights, and engaging in productive client meetings. These discussions revolve around collaborative efforts to enhance customer engagement, acquisition, and retention, leading to further success.
- You are a direct mail expert and a strategic thinker - ready to identify opportunities for innovation and process improvement in direct mail strategies.
- You are client-focused - skilled at building strong client relationships and possess a deep commitment to understanding and meeting the needs of clients in a way that fosters trust and long-term partnership.
- You are analytically focused and results-driven - eager to assess campaign performance, ROI, and make data-driven decisions to optimize campaigns.

- 10+ years of direct mail marketing or execution experience, including the development, management, and optimization of direct mail programs. Agency experience preferred.
- Proficient in fundamental direct mail principles, such as list selection, data strategy, postage optimization, effective creative, copywriting, printing, A/B testing, and vendor sourcing.
- Experience developing direct mail optimization strategies.
- Knowledgeable about postal regulations and data privacy laws.
- Understanding of direct mail software and marketing technology.
- 5+ years of experience in account management or leadership roles.
- Demonstrated history of successful collaboration, with a strong ability to inspire, engage, and motivate both team members and colleagues.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt to changing client needs.
- Ability to analyze data, interpret insights, and provide data-driven recommendations, with a strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
- Excellent project management and organizational skills.
- Experience with client budgets, planning, and forecasting, with a strong financial acumen.
- Experience within the field of educational media and communications is preferred.
- Bachelor's degree is preferred.
